I was told that the 8 inch can go in the front but they dont suggest or list it.

I am going down to pick up a front Assembly from a 2006 4runner limited which is electronic locking and going to see the difference side by side. The guy at the wrecker was VERY interested when i told him what my thought was. It is an 8 inch carrier as well and should be running the same spline count and all as they use just about the same transfer case (Which I am also still trying to find out if it will work in our trucks as it would allow us an AWD mode where the torsen center diff distributes torque as needed front to rear, locking it with a button otherwise)

Lots of idea's and just trying to figure out what would work. For the amount of times I am going to use a locker right now I just want a stock setup. I dont want to pay close to 2000 dollars to have an ARB installed.

If I get a chance I will take pictures of the two diffs side by side and it might just need some mounting brackets to work in our trucks.

Never heard of a front Detroit option.

Another ootion that has not been mentioned is an electronic offering by toyota.
I believe it was offered in hilux 4wd trucks.

I had a Jeep CJ years ago with True Trac's in the front and rear. That made for one awesome 4wd. My Tacoma OR has the e-locker in the rear. Well worth having.....I'd like to have some some sort of locking diff in the front too.

I know... I read the link too. Just thought I'd share as possibly the only other option for the front diff over an ARB.

So after much dismay the wrecker catalogue is incorrect about the 4runner front locker option.
I am looking for a front carrier that mimics the rear though... see what my options are still.

My question is for toyota as why the only front locker option is from outside toyota

Front lockers put huge strain on the weak CV shafts, its a big reason you won't see it on many IFS vehicles.

The only front locker Toyota has had is in the Land Cruiser 80's. (as far as I've seen)

The Hilux Surf's had rear LSD's that were highly sought after.

Knowing what I know now, if I end up buying a Sport next I'll be doing ARB rear locker, I'd rather have absolute control and on board air.

I would agree with the locker putting strain on the system but then again you would only use a locker in the front when you need to. it would be there for the most part just to make sure you can move if you only have 3 wheels on the ground and you want them locked together. Upgrade axles?
Honestly if I could i would be running upgraded axles like what I had on my supra. Those things could handle over 1000 hp and not break on cement with major hookups.
