Your longest high RPM pull on a 2.7

When I am towing my trailer and atv down the freeway with my automatic transmission I cant stay in overdrive, 2.7 just wont pull it. I drive down freeway in 3 and run around 2900-3300 for up to 5 hours straight. My longest highest would be around 3000 for 5 hours. Whats yours??

 

I sometimes stay in 4th (manual) at about 2900-3200 for an hour or so because of mountain passes.

 

I have towed my enclosed trailer for a few thousand miles on different occasions. I try to stop every 2-3 hours on trips longer than 4 hours. I have an automatic and I tow in 3rd gear. ~2800-3500rpm

 

4k+ for about 8 hours.

 

And I thought I ran mine hard. What were you pulling and how fast?

 

I've ran mine at about 3k for 20 hours on cross country trips with just stops for gas and the bathroom. 3k rpms in my truck is about 80mph. Longest traveled in one day 1460 miles in 20-21hours.

 

That and gear for 10 days in the mountains hunting. Most of the trip was 55-65mph climbing a billion feet of altitude, stuck in 3rd for most of it. 4th was no power and 3rd was spinning up. There's no oxygen in the air where I live, and I get REALLY high to go elk hunting. No ooomph without spinning the engine up. I really needed a 3 1/2 gear. I could use 4th every now and then but it wouldn't last long before I needed to downshift.

An engine can safely run pretty hard and cause no damage, you won't really see an issue until you're well past redline. Usually then you're getting into valve float which cause the problem, not the rotating mass. Well, eventually you'll shoot some pistons into your fenders They're not made out of balsa wood and styrofoam. I don't understand why some folks think that anything over 2k rpm is inviting catastrophe.

 

I wasn't doing a pull, but I ran the truck at around 3,300-3,500 for about 12 hours. I was driving from California to New Mexico at around 85mph.

I didn't feel like I was working the engine to hard or anything. Still got decent gas mileage as well.

 

Run mine around 4-4.5k in 2nd going up mountain passes for 45 minutes or so. The altitude makes 4th and 5th pretty much useless.

 

You've all got me at least equalled or beat. When driving around in the hills I've taken it to 4500-5000 for a minute or two if that. I've only done that a few times and stay away from climbs off road that require that. I did drive from Reno, NV to Salt Lake City at 80-85mph so that's 3-3500 rpm for 500 miles but other than that mine never goes above 3000 rpm except a few times a month when I ring it out to 4000 rpm just do "blow it out". I drive 15 miles each way to work with 13 of that on interstate 5 times a week so there really isn't any need to "blow it out" I just do it anyway. It's nice to know what these 2.7's are actually capable of though. I know they are, for the most part, bullet proof.

 

Well at about 4500 RPM on the 110 MPH speed governor for about an hour and a twenty min. Full speed an wide open she ran great. Couldn't keep up with the 3 modified Chevys to save my life but oh well.

 

I just drove 12 hours mostly going 80-85 pushing 3k rpm give or take.. didnt seem like the engine didnt like it or anything.. felt smooth 2017 2.7 5 speed here

 

Just came back from Colorado Utah, 3rd gear and 4k plus was a requirement just to not get run over nut definitely didn't keep it pegged there for too long
