I'm doing my first 3rd gen oil change now and I used a ratchet and the whole thing started loosening without putting too much pressure into it. It was really messy. I've never done an oil change on this type of filter before. I could never get the silver piece in the center to loosen.

Had this setup on my wife's Lexus IS 250. I assure you that changing the oil wasn't just a "tiny bit more difficult" it was a royal PIA to do.

The filter location on my 2015 with the oil cooler makes oil changes clean and a dream to do.

Try putting some anti-sieze on the threads for future changes. It will definitely help with draining the filter case so it's not as messy.

I had the same issue with the RAV4 at first. Once i busted the small plug loose (with the housing in a vice), i made sure to torque the housing fairly snuggly, while tightening the plug much less. No issues since and no leaks.

Now , this is a much cleaner oil change than in my '96 Taco.

Does anyone have torque numbers for these 2 pieces, on both the metal and plastic housings?

Mechanics don't torque that kind of stuff. There are even torque specs on dash screws if you look. Mechs usually only torque important items like head bolts, rod and main bearings, etc.

Don't really care about the other 2 but the switch sacrificed ease of service for a cost savings on the engine

Oh, I realize this. I wanted to see roughly how far apart the housing and drain cap torque values were on these units.

    Thanks, Vbpiper.

I have not read all the posts here, but I would like to add that the cartridge type has a stronger housing than the canister. First one I had was on a 2001 Mercedes-Benz E320, it had an oil monitoring system that I had seen up to 12,000 on an oil change. Granted it was full synthetic and called for 7.5 quarts.
The 2016 Tacoma I see uses the same 04152-YZZA1 as my wife's Lexus RX350, also 10k oil change and I have alway used OEM. Has anyone tried K&N PS-7020? I believe they are made by Mobil 1 which is the oil I plan on using after Toyota Care has run out.

As long as you use a syn. media vs. paper, they are all probably about the same. Just a matter of preference.

I did my first oil change today. I decided to buy the metal filter housing. However, the center tube was the same length/diameter as the tube in the plastic housing. I could not find a difference between the two. Just in case there was a difference that I could not find, I switched them anyway but I don't think I needed to. The oil filter socket tends to cock sideways a little bit which causes it to become stuck on the filter housing. A flat-tip screwdriver will dislodge it though. With the part number for the filter cap socket (ASSTOY640...yes that is the actual part number for the Assenmacher Toyota specialty tool) and the Quick Fists I have installed, perhaps I will get more ladies interested in dates....LOL!

I just love the oil filter location & catch cup on my '08, makes for a very clean operation. I've done a few oil changes on Toyotas with the cartridge, and found it a lot messier, being on the bottom of the engine.
I've had 3 BMW's and all of them had the cartridge type filter, but they were mounted on top of the engine in a very accessible location, no mess.

And yes, buy the special oil filter wrench, makes removing a piece of cake. I think I paid around $10 at O'Reily's.

Anyone else notice that the amount of threads on the outside are different? That would lead me to believe that the housing will sit lower overall, as less will be going "into" the engine. Does that mean that the top of the center support tube would not be sealing against whatever surface it is suppose to? Could that lead to oil bypassing the filter, and not actually being filtered?

It's very robust. I've personally never seen a damaged one is all the countless cartridge type oil changes I've done. Use the correct "Toy 640" wrench and only snug down on it when tightening (the o-ring does the sealing) and you'll be fine.

Theoretically, it may work since it is a 64mm/14 flute, but there is potentially some difference.
    The correct tool is:

Hmmmm....the "center support tube" as you call it is full of holes...exactly what is it supposed to "seal" against?? No, the housing does not sit any lower. The bottom flange is the same on both....that is what mates against the housing...

The 64mm should work fine. I got this one and it fits perfectly, both the plastic and metal housings.
