I want a new laptop, but my finances won't let me get one. I've watched a few uploads on Youtube about upgrading and it seems legit, but I have also found one or two videos that makes it seem like it doesn't make a huge difference.

Has anyone upgraded to an SSD from a hard drive? Did it speed things up or will I have to get a new processor, cpu,ram along with the SSD? I'm trying to be frugal with this upgrade.

    thank you!

I have not done this but have had several friends who have done this. Like the last person said boot times, writing, and reading files are sped up significantly. The only downside is the storage is pricey.

Depending on what you use is for and how old it is you could also convert your laptop to a Chrome Book and it will run faster with an Android OS

makes a big difference but you need to pay a lot for a reliable one

if you are complaining about finances, best stick to spinning disks

An ssd allow faster load when turn on. But there are draw backs too, space available, never defrag the drive just to name a few. Over all I say it worth it.

What are the specs that your current laptop has? Cause while an ssd will certainly speed things up, it won't make sense putting it in a super old laptop.

Upgrading to an SSD may or may not give you what you want.

    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820721107
    I have two Kingston drives in my ~$2000 Gaming Rig, a 120GB & 240GB.
The 120GB has been reliable for over a year now, I got mine when it was ~$80. For me, there was an increase in boot times, loading applications and file transfers, but not significant performance.

An SSD upgrade does not require any other new parts; a performance upgrade does (which are more difficult for laptops).

Transferring your OS from one disk to another would be the most difficult part. After, you can buy a cheap HDD case & use your old drive as a backup/extra storage depending on its size.

Post us your laptop model and we can probably tell you if it's worth it, or if your fiancée is crazy.

Converted my six year old laptop to SSD and changed OS from Win 7 to Win 10. *Much* faster boot times and app loading. Another bonus to SSD in laptops is they run cooler and use less power.

Depending on how old your machine is it may not be able to use some of the features that are built in to current SSD such as 6 Gb/sec IO speeds or certain BIOS settings.

It all depends on the laptop. It will provided faster load times. Ive had a pny 120gb in mine for over a year now with no problems and I game hard on it from time to time. I also took out my cd drive and put in a 1tb regular hard drive. So my main programs/os load on the ssd but the rest goes on to secondary. It's also fun to say you have 2 hard drives in your laptop :D

What are the specs on the laptop? It will improve things but it won't work miracles. I put one in my wifes laptop and it's a great improvement. Hers has a 2nd gen i3 and 4gigs of ram. If you're light on ram you'll still have some performance issues because of paging memory, but even paging will be faster.

If you just want the computer feel a little faster it'll be a good upgrade. If you're looking to improve things that rely on cpu/gpu (games) this wont really improve perfomance.

Failure rate of mechanical hard drives in laptops is around 30% in 5 years. If you lug around the laptop for school/work/traveling, it's a good idea to upgrade to an SSD for durability alone.

Laptop hard drives tend to be pathetically slow. I have a 6 months old Dell laptop for work, Core i5 with 4 GB of RAM. I noticed a nice boost with document access times and file searches when I started using an old Crucial M4 in a USB external enclosure.

The first clue that whatever you want to upgrade is too old would be no sata connection for the ssd. Bump the memory too and it will be enough to get you by for another year or 2 depending on what it's intended use is..............price is no longer impediment for ssd's

    Hello all,

Thanks for the replies. I have a Dell lattitude e6400, link at bottom of page. That's mainly what I am looking for is faster load times, cooler temps, hopefully a better battery life.

I started going back to school again and i'll have to lug around my lap top to class here pretty soon, another reason why I wanted to upgrade to an ssd( thanks Kenlyns).

    http://www.cnet.com/products/dell-latitude-e6400/

For the sdd I was looking at a samsung 840 pro ssd (mainly cause the youtube vids, I can use it as a tutor to help with the conversion, but it looks like these ssd's have great reviews)

Another question, sorry this one is a little long. Got sick of the mortgage biz and went back to school. Business Administration with a Cyber Security conentration, I might double major and also look into a Information Systems and Technology as well ( with my cyber security I would only have to take maybe 2-3 classes and I'd get the Information Systems as well, being new to this industry and coming from the mortgage biz, I want to make myself as marketable as possible). So my question is about my class for the tech gurus on this thread. I took a couple classes this semester and found that 3 of my classes were pretty similar, so when I studied for one, it kind of re-enforced the other. So for anyone in this industry would you try and group s9me of these classes together? I don't think pre-reqs will be an issue.

So you should be able to upgrade with an SSD. Crucial lists it as being compatible with their ssd's and ram ( you can probably get this stuff cheaper elsewhere) but It'll give you an Idea of what you're looking for.

An SSD will help a little with battery life, but it won't do a lot. It wont help much with cooler temps, make sure you clean out your heatsink if you're having heat problems.

Heat isn't so much of an issue, but anything that will make my laptop a but cooler isn't bad in my opinion. I've cleaned the heat sink, took the fan out and wiped it clean with a q-tip.

Once you move to SSD you will never want to touch a computer without an SSD

I recommend Samsung Evo 850 Pro or a Crucial MX200 series SSD in 500GB size or higher.

You will see a big difference in boot time as well as how long it takes to open files. Since there are no moving parts, SSD's are more resistant to drops/bumps.

Ultimately that's about all I want for now. I'm hoping the ssd upgrade will be enough to get me through 4 quarters then I'll think about getting a new one. Thanks for all the replies and I'll look at the Samsung 850 (I'm Korean, so have to look here first)
