I noticed my stubby antenna was missing yesterday and figured either somebody stole it or it fell off after two years. When I looked, it has broken off and part of the stem is still inside the antenna base. I can't get it out with anything. Does anybody have an idea how to get it out or how to replace the antenna base? Thanks.

    2 things to try:
1 - just get a small drill bit, like a 1/8" and set your drill on reverse. Putting pressure on the stud with the drill bit while spinning it in reverse (non-cutting direction) may give you enough friction to spin the broken section out. I've gotten lucky like that before.

2 - Drill out the center of the broken stud some, and then use an EZ out to back it out of the hole. EZ outs are reverse threaded bolt/screw extractors designed specifically for this.

Mine got broken off at the car wash. Somewhere in my garage I have a screw extractor, but I couldn't find it. So, I drilled a small (1/8) hole, and was able to wedge a small torx bit into and then backed it out. Took me longer to find the right size torx bit than it did to drill a shallow hole and back the broken piece out.

I tried the screw extractor, and it didn't work. There is no way it is coming out now. Luckily I use satellite radio, so I don't really have a need for the antenna anyway. But I would like to have it fixed before I ever get rid of it. Now I need to find a way to fill the hole so it doesn't get water in there and cause problems. Thanks for the suggestions.

Try a LEFT Handed drill bit.

    Work slowly.

You need to drill the hole all the way through the stud so the ez-out doesn't bottom out and lose its grip. Mine came out really easily when I had this happen. If that doesn't work, try a left handed (reverse threaded) drill bit like jimmyh said. Good luck op

Left handed drill bit is the easiest way. Spun mine right out. no pun intended.

That is usually what happens with a left handed bit. Plus a right handed bit just tightens it more.

    Hi All,

I have the exact same problem.

I'm contemplating between a left handed drill bit or using a screw extractor. What size drill bit should I use? 1/8"?

Get a left handed drill bit smaller than the diameter of the broken stud. If you have a screw extractor set each extractor should have a proper drill bit. Then get the same size in a left handed version.

Center punch the broken piece that is stuck to keep the bit centered.

Drill backwards slowly and let the drill bit do the work. This is Important.

Usually the drill will bite and back out the broken piece.

If not then, get the proper sized easy out or screw extractor and remove the piece.

Happened to me before too, except mine rusted. I had to almost remove the entire psngr side dash and wheel liner to replace the assembly. On a Tacoma, I'm
not sure if it's similar if you end up needing to replace the entire assembly.

Option 2 worked for me, took all of a few minutes...Go to any hardware store to get one if you don't already have an EZ out. You can get what you need for under $5

same happened to me at the car wash this week. 5/64 bit and a screw extractor did the trick to get the stub out.
thanks to all at TW for the threads on this subject
