WHAT oil is factory installed in 3.5L V-6

My salesman told me that there is synthetic oil in my 2016 TACOMA 3.5L V-6 and that it will be good for 10,0000 miles. 1700 miles later I am ready to change oil myself - so I go to the parts department and ask for genuine TOYOTA oil and filter. OK so he give me standard oil... I say - I believe my 2016 Tacoma has synthetic oil. Parts man say only the 4 cylinders spec. synthetic.

SO the question is WHAT OIL WAS PUT IN AT THE FACTORY ??

Your oil cap should say 0W20. Use that or 0W30, both are typically only available in synthetic. Buy the oil from retail stores but buy the filter from the dealer.

Changing the oil after break-in (first 1000 mi according to owner's manual) is a good idea. The salesman at my dealer even recommended it.

 

As stated, recommended oil only comes in synthetic. I can not verify the first 1000 mile change. What page of the manual. No offense, just want to confirm. Have been looking in manual for recomendations and could not find.

 

I can't imagine doing anything a salesman recommends.

 

There is no "breakin" oil change anymore. You have synthetic oil, and the first oil change is 10000 miles or one year. It is all in the manual.

 

OP, there are several threads on this. The oil is 0w20 synthetic for the v6. Toyota AND the handbook say 1st oil change is at 10,000 miles.

I debated this for months, and at 6400 miles my oil looked dirty so I had it changed. I will do mine every 5000 miles.

Some dealerships offer every 5000, but that is the individual dealership. Toyota recommends every 10,000 miles, BUT they are assuming you will trade in your truck every 2 years. This is MY truck, and I will be keeping it, so I will change it more often.

Toyota care is every 10,000 miles for oil change as well. Every 5000 for rotate tires.

 

This. I personally plan on changing my oil at 3k miles, then letting Toyota do the 5k and 10k maintenance.

 

Please verify this: I belive it's every 10000 miles or every 6 months. I won't hit 10000 in a year. Maybe 50000.

 

I totally agree...I buy Mobil 1 Synthetic 0-20 from Wal-Mart (5 qt. containers) and ordered the OEM filters from Amazon (has the Toyota seal but less $ than the dealership). I didn't read about the "first 1000 mile change" in the manual but do that with any vehicle I buy...then every 5K after than. Change the air filter out every 10K which is probably more often than required but we get a lot of pollen in this area especially at this time of the year.

 

My dealer claims that the oil should be changed every 5,000 and even put a little sticker on my windshield stating that...

I'll do the initial change at 5,000 and then go to the 10,000 mile interval.

I have 3 'free' oil change vouchers, so that should be good for a while.

 

When I take mine in for the 5k check, I'm going to try and get them to do the first of the
2 freebies we get, shouldn't be an issue but who knows with dealers. After that I'll go back
for the 10k check, and then @ 15k get the other free oil change and then finish out the
rest of the ToyoCare items. After that I'll do my own, I've never used a dealer for
oil changes but with 2 free might as well take it.

 

FWIW, gen 2 V6 was dino oil and I4 was synthetic from factory.

I would assume it's totally possible for it to remain true for the 2016.

 

The dealer wants you to spend your money there. The engineers provided the recommended maintenance for 10k mi oil change frequency based on their design with science and data to back it up. Trust the engineers before you trust a salesman.

 

I would trust advice from the tree in front of my house before the salesman.

 

Always a good debate when oil is involved lol. I prefer as some mentioned 1st oil change early, I'll go 500 miles then Mobil 1 is going in, @5000 repeat for as long as I own the Taco. Someone had posted a pic of their oil during the 1st change, I don't want those particles floating in my engine for 10,000 miles. If it makes you feel better going 5k or 10k it's your truck, do what makes you happy. btw I don't rack allot of miles on my vehicles so cost isn't my worry. If you buy a used truck and the owner says he changed the oil every 5k or 10k would it make a difference?

1000 miles is the break-in period stated in the manual (pg 156 for 2016 Taco). Whether you want to do an oil change at the end of the break-in period is up to you.

Not true anymore. For 2016, both the V6 and I4 "require" 0W20 synthetic. 2GR-FKS uses 0W20 Synthetic from the factory, as does the 2TR-FE. Both run the same interval (10,000 miles or 16,000km).

2015 V6 used 5W30 non-Synthetic.
