I'm in Cayucos, CA. While I'll admit building it was fun, I think I'll spend my weekends enjoying it.
Find someone who is a woodworker, and see if they will help/teach you with the build. I spent about 70 hours with my retired neighbor/woodworking ninja and built this. I learned a ton, and now have this rad friendship with my neighbor and his wife. I wanna adopt them as my parents! Haha You'll be stoked when it's finished, I promise.

 

for those of you that installed nets on the inside of their shell or other attachment points, did you drill from the outside of the shell in? or from the inside to the outside? didnt go through the shell?

Do you have Thule or Yakima tracks?

 

i do not...though that is also on the short list...

 

I would do that first then install the netting. Love mine.

 

I did one similar for my old Kia Sorento. Just really didn't want to do it again - so many mistakes cost me more $$ than I budgeted for.

I copied a version of geekhouse23's setup, but instead of installing the net, I hung carabiners from several of the bolts that hold the track down.
Then, I use the carabiners to hang various items from the roof on the inside of my cap.

 

I have small drings that hang down from 6 track nuts and bolts and then the betting is clipped to those drings

Without through-bolting, I can't think of a good way to make an attachment. I suppose you could cut back the carpet and then glass a mounting point to the fiberglass, but what a PITA. My shell came from the factory with fishing rod holders attached to the ceiling. They used sheet metal screws and they some of them just fell out once they were a little loose. In the honeycomb area of the SnugTop, there's just not much meat and everyplace else is too thin for screws (unless you drill all the way through, but ugh!). So really, you want rack tracks to make it all work clean.

I have Yakima tracks on mine from the factory, but they only through-bolted the three center mounting holes on each rail. The outer ends are riveted and the mounting hole in between is not used. That's different than my previous shell, which was the exact same model but was returned because it was not built with the reinforced roof like I ordered. That one had all the bolts on each side. So, I'm not sure what gives. I also don't see how I would slide on a mounting point if the end caps are riveted on. There are 4 sliding nuts on each side, so I guess I would be forced to use those. I've never had this type of roof rack and I haven't researched it, so maybe there's an obvious answer once I get to that point and start investigating.

 

Where did you get the netting for your topper? Was it already built to fit or did you have to Macgyver it yourself?
