Year, color and condition of the rest of your truck would be a factor.

eBay units are very likely Chinese knock offs. Fine for some situations, others, not so much.

Just as a update for everyone. I ended up going with the above mentioned tailgate replacement. Wow. Very solid. Exact color match and seems to be the same quality as OEM. Was not hard to switch hardware over to new one. Would highly recommend for those needing to replace

Scraps, you bought a tailgate from your first post of this thread? ($400 on eBay) I need to replaced my newly dented tailgate, but was hesitant to pull the trigger as I have heard virtually 0 feedback on TW. Now that about a year has passed, are you still happy with your purchase? Thanks in advanced!!

For the price it's the best bang for your buck. Packaged nice and paint was perfect. Fit was nice as well. Anyone looking for a replacement this is the one to get

Just received and installed the replacement tailgate from Ebay(mbiauto). What feedback I read about this tailgate on here was very positive, however information seemed limited, so wanted to share my experience.
    Pictures to follow

    Pros
    • Great factory match paintjob
    • Overall, build quality seems quite good
    • Came in very nice packaging
    • Way cheaper than OEM
    Cons
    • Fitment isn't perfect, some gap differences on sides(honestly very minor)
    • Visually appears to be thinner gauge metal in some parts(though still feels very strong)
    I would definitely buy again.

My only [slight]issue was that the existing hinge bracket bolt hole didn't line up perfectly. As a result the bolt cross-threaded slightly. It still holds just fine and whole tailgate feels sturdy when I stand on it.

Closeup of the cross-threaded bolt. I still cranked it down pretty hard and it feels solid.

Ugh...where was this thread when I had my tailgate stolen. Could've saved $500. My insurance deductible was $1000 to replace my stolen one!

When you said that the metal is visually thinner would you mind telling where specifically? I'm looking at getting one as well (also pyrite mica!)

Parkman, the edges of the tailgate where the metal is folded over (you can see in my last two pictures), it looked slightly thinner, but I don't have any proof (haven't measure with calipers or anything like that). However after having the tailgate on for about a month now, I am still very satisfied with my purchase and would buy one again 100%.

One thing I am going to do is add a piece of dynamat to the inside of the tailgate so it doesn't sound so "tinny/hollow" when I close the tailgate. I noticed the OEM version essentially has some sound dampening material inside and it definitely does make a difference. It sounds a bit more solid when you close the OEM tailgate. If you have any more questions or want more pictures don't hesitate to ask, I'm happy to help.

I appreciate you getting back to me.

It looks pretty darn good, I did some more research outside of Tacoma World. The only concern I'm having at this point is I've read great things about the company and then I heard some things about rust with them. Thats my one concern about it long term as I'll probably own this truck for another 15 years or so.

I talked to the company they said that the return rate on all of their parts is between 2-5% and thats including all reasons as to why.

My mind is now really turning looking if I should go with it or go the OEM (Found for $449) route and get it painted but I don't know what to expect cost wise on paint if I went that route. I'm assuming this would end up being significantly cheaper vs. $489 for the painted aftermarket one.

I'm in the same boat as you as my truck only had 27kmiles when the tailgate got damaged and I don't plan on selling as it will eventually become a fulltime wheeler (currently my DD and everything else rig). The paint job seems really good, but I don't know what sort of prime/prep work is beneath. I got a quote on a body shop to paint an OEM tailgate and the time/material was about $300, but I'm sure you could do a bit better than that if you shop around or know the right guy. I would think the rust issue is all related to paint job rather than build quality.
Not sure how you'd end up making the OEM cheaper unless your assuming the aftermarket route would warrant a replacement/repairs down the road. At that point, you're probably splitting hairs.

I need one too and just saw 649 for a new one for my 2017. So is the one from Ebay OEM like it states? Or aftermarket. I can't tell by the thread seems to be both lol

Sorry, I haven’t been on here in quite a while and I don’t get notifications. The paint match is excellent, it is OEM color.

Now that the tailgate is 3 years old, it’s still holding up well, there are a few rust spots at the very bottom, but I think rocks stuck between the bumper and tailgate nicked the bottom of the tailgate. It’s easily going to last 5 more years before anything major happens to it.
