My original tranny is sitting in storage. I swapped it out because of a loud rattle-clacking noise that I'm pretty sure was coming from the input shaft bearing. The used tranny that I swapped into the truck has a lot of bearing whine that is getting louder all of the time - most likely also from the input shaft bearing (whines in all gears except 4th).

My plan is to rebuild the old one and then swap it back in, then maybe rebuild the current one to sell (assuming my first rebuild goes well).

So has anybody done this? Can you recommend a bearing/synchro/seal kit that is quality and not too pricey?

Any recommendations on an economical gear puller that will get the job done?

    Tips and suggestions welcomed.

    Thanks for the link!

Can you suggest an affordable gear puller that is long enough to get all of the gears off?

Did you ever end up doing the transmission rebuild?

Yep. I pulled the transmission apart myself, took the shift forks off, then took the shafts to a transmission shop and had them do the pulling and pressing of the new bearings and synchros for me (paying them was cheaper than buying pullers and a press). It ended up needing a new countershaft because the bearing had gone bad and chewed a groove in the shaft. Once it was all fixed up, I put the transmission back together and put it in.

Since then I've driven it from here in NC to Brownsville TX and back, pulled a trailer from NC to New Mexico and back, and just got home yesterday from a 6800 mile road trip to Idaho. The rebuilt tranny has worked great.

What kit did you buy? And what was total cost to do the complete job paying the shop and all? Good info, thanks

I bought a kit from the site that cruncher linked above. It arrived with the wrong input shaft bearing, but they were good about refunding that cost, and I bought another bearing locally. The kit was about $300, the new countershaft was around $300, and the labor was about $300 for the pulling and pressing. Say about $1000 by the time I bought fluid and had to buy another output shaft seal because I bungled the first one. Could have been a $600 job if I had done everything right and the countershaft hadn't been chewed up.
