I am looking to upgrade my 2nd Gen regular cab 5 lug with a fat bobs leveling kit and some larger 31' tires. I would like to keep my stock rims but have heard some say that running a 31/10.5/15 tire on the stock 6 inch rims is dangerous and you can potentially pop a bead. Any input you guys could give on the situation would be greatly appreciated. Truck is mostly used for street driving with the occasional light off roading adventure. (Looking at BFG All Terrains and General Grabber AT2's)

I cant say on the 31's part but I do have BFG Ats and really like them. Also keep in mind you may loose some power due to larger tires. Also where are you getting 6 inch from?

Goodyear Wrangler TrailMark 31's. F.B's 2.75" spacer, TRD rear shocks, stub antenna, ripped out charcoal filter added AFE dry, Chrome grille, upgraded to SR5 sun visors, variable wipers, backup camera, HID DDM 35w 5000kv, ebay fogs w/yellow LEDs.
I ran 31s on a 6.5" rim for a month or two with no problem other than rubbing the sway bar at full lock. I think you'll be fine other than rubbing issues but either way you're looking for new wheels with 31s. anyway if you're going with bigger tires i say ditch those steel boots and get some alloys. those stock steelies weight a ton!

you will be fine as long as you do not air down too much when/if you offroad. I had 31s on stock 5 lug rims.

I'm getting 6 inches from the stock rim size. I thought they were 6 inches but I could be wrong.

R15 is the diameter of the rim. 6" is the width

Well stock tire width is 70 and I'm running 235/75/r15 which translates to 29's with 7.5 wide.

    The wheels are 15x6

235/75r15 means the tire dimensions are 29 inches by 7.5in, not the wheels

    err.. guys?

The second number in the tire size (ie metric 235/75r15) is not a referral to a unit of measurement, but to the aspect ratio. It is the ratio of the height of the tire's cross-section, to its width. ;)

A 235-75-15 is a metric tire. The 235 means the tread is 235 mm wide. The 75 is the height of the tire sidewall as an aspect ratio of the tire width. In this case it's 75% of 235, which is around 176 mm, which converts to just shy of 7". Naturally the 15 is the wheel diameter. That help?

I have to let the pretty pictures speak for me. Basically, the sidewall is measured as a percentage ratio of the width of tire. My personal preference would be a 235/85R16, currently running a 225/75R16 tire. Relatively skinny tire, but sidewall is tall. Makes for a good tire to cut through snow around here, but are a heavy tire.

See below screen grabs to compare stock, vs commonly used 235/75R15 replacement.

Play around and compare with the various tire sizes (example /40 /55 /70 /75 /85) and the relationship of the aspect ratio in tire sizes should become more apparent. tire-1.jpgtire-2.jpg

I run a 31x10.5x15 on a 15x8 rim. No issues other then rubbing at full lock. You'll need to do some trimming. I've had fat bobs kit for 4 years now. Try to upgrade the rear shocks if you can. They rust easy.

None - I can't find a lift kit that fits this model !!!
Thanks Bristow, and the rest of you all as well. What lift and other mods do have on you tacoma - that you can mount 31's?
Background: I bought a 2003 2.4l base model 5-lug for my daughter (standard transmission - so that she can REALLY learn to drive). She wasn't thrilled about a truck at first, but now that seen some pics from TacoWorld and noticing other Tacomas around town, she's going along for the ride. We've had a terrible time getting clear, concise info about wheels and tires and lift/leveling kits - and what we need to do to go higher and bigger.....

Unfortunately nobody has given the time of day to us 5lug 2.7 owners in terms of an affordable lift. Fatbobs and readylift are the only two companies I know of that have any "suspension lift" for these trucks. I'm running an inch and a half spacer with my -19 offset rims. Does the job, turns a lot of heads that's for sure haha.

Bristow, I see that you've posted pics of your truck from the front and rear. However, you haven't showed us a side view!

Thanks brother - I have Fat Bob's 1.5 inch spacers on the front - no change to the back - with FabTech Shocks, so i guess I'm going in the right direction. As for the rims: I understand that you have 15x8 x 19mm offset. What about backspace (and yes, I'm learning all of this as we speak)?

3.75 backspacing but if you add the inch and a half spacer from what I was told that lowers your backspacing giving you more "stance" so I'd be at a 2.25 backspacing
