Hi guys... I've been spending a ridiculous amount of time in the 3rd gen forums reading and sometimes posting... I absolutely love the new truck's design and have my heart set on one. BUT... it's not the best idea for me to spend 30k+ on a vehicle right now. I'm thinking of going used if I can find a deal just under $20k.I know a TON about the 3rd gens but hardly anything about 2nd gens. This will be my first truck, although I'm a longtime Toyota guy. I'm not in a rush to buy but really have been wanting to get a truck for while.

My question is... what years between 2010 and 2015 have their been moderate to major changes in this generation vehicle. Any design changes I should look at or any important mechanical updates? I'm specifically looking to pull the trigger on a 2011 with 38k miles in great condition. Would I be wise to look at a newer year based on any changes that might have happened with the builds?

My other option is to just say screw it and hold onto my money and wait til I'm comfortable buying a brand new 3rd gen. Thanks ahead of time!

You re going to pay a lot for a really good used 2nd Gen Tacoma. Since you already seem set on a 3rd Gen and it is always wise to just wait until you can afford what you want. So my advice save your money and just by a new 3rd Gen Tacoma when you are ready to.

thanks for the advice. to be a bit more specific... i'm looking at a deal for a Prerunner TRD Sport 2wd DCLB... I think I can get it for $21k... he's asking 23k. If I go new it would be a TRD OR DCLB 4x4... about 16 grand more LOL

2012 got a redesigned front end and a slight change in the dash with a new radio. After that, there were a few radio/temperature gauge/clock changes but nothing major.

Something to think about, bought my 2015 4cyl DCSB Prerunner SR new in Nov 2014 for 22,800, thing still blue books for 21k with 18k miles on it. If you can live without the long bed and understand it will be slow, you get a lot of bang for the buck on the 4cyl Double Cab.

Honestly I looked at a 15 f150 2.7 ecoboost 4x4 and a 16 taco SR 4x4 this weekend thinking about month end deals and wanting more power and 4x4, then I ran the numbers and decided, I'm good. Sometimes I wish I weren't such a cheap ass though.
