LT vs P rated tires and tread life

    I'm about to order a new set of tires. Probably going to be the Toyo Open Country AT2s in 265/75/16.

    I currently have the P rated version of this tire on my truck. Would like to upgrade to the LT version which is a C-rated and 6ply tire.

    The P version has 13/32" tread depth, but also carries a 65,000 mile tread life warranty, while the LT version has 16/32" tread depth, but only a 50,000 mile tread life warranty.

    All things else being equal, wouldn't the LT tires with more tread depth have a longer tread life?

    I had the Cooper Discoverer ATPs in 265/75r16 with with the SL rating and a 55,000 mile warranty. I burned through them in 32000 miles. I probably could have put another 8000 highway on them, but they were losing their off road capability rapidly. Most of the wear came from my recent 10,000 mile overland journey and the amount of gear I was carrying was well over what the SL rated tires could handle.

    Go with the LT tires if you plan to load them down or tear them up off road. You'll lose a little MPG but they payoff is probably worth it. Also of note, I did those 32k miles in a year and a half and our roads in NYC are total garbage.

    I've got a bit over 83,000 miles on my current set of Toyos. Yeah, they are getting pretty worn down, but still not bald by any means. Haven't done any off-roading in over a year because they are wearing out. I do 99.99% high way driving.

    I dont know anything about toyo's but i would say that it has to do with the rubber compound on the tire. A very soft compound would seem to wear more than a harder compound would, or at least thats what i would think anyways.

    I've had my P rated toyo's for about a year and they've been fine but I'm planning on replacing them this summer. Like you already know, they supposedly have that 65000 mile warranty but I'm really not happy with how they've worn. They got me through the winter but in wet weather they are already losing a little traction, the tread depth is ok but the sipes aren't full depth and are starting to disappear. Get what you want but I personally won't be buying the toyo's again.

    As for LT vs P, I think the biggest question you need to ask yourself is what kind of driving will you do? Mostly on road, IMO the LT are overkill.

    I have the same load range C tire in 265/75/16 (they really aren't 6 ply) and I'm going on 2 yrs and have 12/32" still remaining on all 4. I rotate every 5,000 miles. I don't pay much attention to tread life warrantees (unless they wear prematurely...but that's never happened) as I change tires every 3 years regardless of how much tread is remaining on the tire. If there's usable tread left, I sell them on CL. I do this because I always want the best possible performance from the tire for what I like to do (hunting, fishing, exploring, general winter driving, etc).
