The distance til empty calculation is way off. The two times I've taken it to zero the truck only took 18.5-19 gallons on a 21.1 gallon tank. Has anyone gotten over 20 gallons of fuel on a fill up?

it's just a guide to make sure you don't run out. Would you actually want it to go boom your out of gas right when it hits zero. Just saying.

Meaning one of two things IMHO.

Either everything is calculated wrong on the display,

    or

the algorithm for the distance till empty has a cushion to protect those who want to test zero from burning up their fuel pump.

Could be a bit of both I suppose.

I'm pretty sure it lays it out in the manual. There's a 2.5 gallon reserve when the "distance to empty" reaches 0.

Edit - 3.2 gallon reserve, page 523 in the manual.

Just went to fuel up, meter said 12 miles to empty and put in 18.4 gallons.

I have not let mine get below a 4th of a tank, doubt I ever will but thanks for the heads up.

Sorry my last vehicles have been tacomas, I've never had one of these futuristic computer dashes, I think it has packcells or pascals in it

Vehicles come with a reserve so that when the tank says its ran out of gas you still have a gallon or 2 left to get you to a pump.

What happens after zero? My motorcycles have a "fuel trip" odometer so once you hit the reserve, it starts counting up how many miles you've gone since the fuel light came on.

I think it will say refuel now or something, the computer gets pretty pissy at you, I only started the thread to see if others were getting the warning that early. It's kind of silly that I can go 60-80 miles once the initial warning comes on.

When my low fuel light came on for the first time it said 18 miles to empty. 2019 TRD OR 4x4 DCLB. I thought that was odd, then I saw this:

Why is that silly? I am sure that folks have relied on that extra mileage on numerous occasions.

Drive around at redline as soon as the warning comes on and until you run it dry. That’ll give you about the worst case scenario for the future.

I think all Japanese cars do this. I've known for years you can take a Honda or Toyota a good 30 miles past 0. I kinda like it.

You should sue Toyota. Those are deep pockets.

Maybe you'll win some strips of rag paper from a private bank that defrauds US citizens by printing "Federal Reserve Note" on their trash.

Then again, since this is covered in the Owner's Manual, maybe not. But, reading is hard for some people, so maybe you can make a case that Toyota placed an unreasonably difficult burden on you by expecting you to read. Weirder stuff happens.

Every car does it, regardless of manufacturer or country, and has done since fuel gauges became standard equipment. All fuel level sending units are designed to have a reserve (usually 3 to 5 gals). So even an Analog gauge saying empty or 0 or digital saying 0 miles left, simply means you’ve hit reserve.

Ok. I've only had Honda/Toyota for years.
