Starting an internship as a project engineer (project manager) at a local general contracting construction company. I wore a suit to the interview but noticed a lot of people were wearing diffrent things so didn't pay much attention to the dress code. Nothing was said to me about a dress code but this is my first time working in a professional environment so I need some help.

Construction companies tend to be pretty laid back - jeans and polo shirts are pretty common for project managers. So I think a dress shirt and tie is overkill. But if it was me, I'd go with slacks and a polo shirt the first day. You won't be too overdressed, but you'll still show that you are taking the job seriously.

I think it's more important how you approach the day (and the first week+). Listen close, ask lots of questions, be eager to work hard and learn. Be a sponge - it's how you learn and pay your dues.

I would personally wear dress pants with a dress shirt and tie. After the first day you will get a vibe for the appropriate dress code.

I'm not too up on yyour line of work, so..

If you're at a desk or in training, suit.

If you're outside, I'd go slacks and a Polo or buttondown shirt

I did some work with a construction company during grad school and it seemed the project managers all wore the heavier duty material chinos or jeans with button down long sleeve dress casual shirts or polos. They all wore steel toe boots because that was part of the rules being on an active construction sight and what not.

Having said all that, on the first day better to err on the side of over dressed than underdressed. I would go with either chinos or dress slacks with a button down long sleeve shirt.

Carhartt is always a good construction company choice. They do have dressier stuff than just the duck overalls.
