Last Friday I had a near disastrous experience at a boat launch ramp due to exposure of heavy algae growth at low tide. I could not get traction no matter what I tried including low gear and switching to auto LSD. Almost jackknifed the trailer and almost went off the side of the ramp and into a rock pile. Had to be pulled out by a Chevy dully who was also having problems with traction. Long story short, our recovery point sucks and won’t accept anything greater than a 1/2” shackle. Today I modified my recovery point by extending it and adding a hole that will accept a 3/4” shackle. Used 5/16” plate rather than the stock 1/4”.

 

Sorry but that's an inherent problem with the computer control program. The LSD applies braking to the spinning wheel and the throttle is ramped down and no way to disable on the stock Tacoma 2 or 4 wheel drive. Only the TRD Off-Road model allows disabling when you go to 4 low and lock the rear axles the dash lights up with all those ECM controls off. The front axles have a switch to re-enable only the front traction control with rear locker on. Just the facts and sucks for all the 2 wheel drives and non Off-Road 4 wheel drives. Earlier models of the Tacoma had an actual mechanical locker. On Pre-runners better tires may help some but very limited in low traction conditions.

The bent metal bracket on the passenger side is actually pretty beefy and I'd use it if I could find a way to attach to it. Looks like somebody has, I'd use that in a pinch. I put the TRD off road hook in its place and that thing is beefy as hell, that's what I'd recommend.

 

I never could get myself to buy in to an anchor point that is hanging on bolts - to a nut tacked in side a sheet metal box. All of them I've looked at had "battle damage" from severe use - the nuts dimple out the sheet steel.

This one won't come out without removing a big chunk of the skid x-member. It is 1.00 thick 6061T6 aluminum (35,000 psi yield strength) - but it could be steel.

The whole front x-member is attached to the frame with a pair of four sided sheet metal boxes - with big holes on all four sides. The x-member appears to have been specifically designed to attach the leading edge of the factory skid plate.

I’ve had three toyotas and while I dont 4wheel like I did back in the days,(currently own a prerunner) I pulled and been pulled by the factory points in some pretty hairy spots and never pulled one out of the frame, what are y’all doing out there.

 

I can tell you - and others will attest to stuff similar this - that if you are for instance elk hunting (October), 10/15 miles back, near the wilderness area (Gros Ventre river road east of Jackson, Wyo comes to mind) and then it decides to snow 2-1/2 feet - unexpectedly........... there is no telling what sort of loads you will put on your truck - or trucks to eventually get out of there. Like hook three chained up outfits with horse trailers nose to tail - and use the little truck out front to "break trail" - (reeling it back in with the second truck's winch). Every possible attachment point is going to get a test. Every bit of recovery equipment you brought along - is going to get used. The "load rating" Toyota suggests for the front tie down points will never come to mind.

 

Which is kinda why I want the BP Fab or ARB point on front.

 

If you have an after market bumper or are in the market for one, I would suggest looking into bumper reinforcement brackets like the BAMF variety here:

I have another brands brackets and when I purchased them, they were the only ones in the market at that time but I would snatch up these heavier duty brackets in a heartbeat. That way you should be able to pull from your bumpers snatch points without overstressing your bumper mounting hardware.

Yep - I've been a mechanical engineer for over 40 years now. That's the reason I don't trust the stuff that just hangs on bolts stuck in the tacked in nuts. The ARB part looks like a useful item - just grossly over priced.
