transmission and mpg question

    how big of a problem is the transmission in the 2016?i did test drive one and my first impression was it keep falling off, going into to high of a gear,and then there was nothing in the gas pedal till you pushed it half to floor. when you punch it, it takes off, i was impressed with that part, but i just don't something always shifting. i do tow the snowmobiles now and then and going west on new york thruway can be a struggle when its windy.i've read different posts that say it's a big problem, is it? Also my 4 cyl 5 speed manual ranges from 18-23 mpg (pretty consistent 19-20 city)which i like but getting tired of shifting. going to dealer this weekend to see how much i ll get for my trade and what a 2016 tacoma sr5 4x4 long bed will cost me, is it too early to buy a 16? kind of long but i will appreciate any info/advice thanks

    I have the 6MT, but I have read that the jumpiness you describe above is, to a certain extent, a result of the car trying to learn your driving style. Machine learning doesn't work that well when you and everybody else is trying to test drive the vehicle. I found the same when I test drove the auto and decided against it, but this was before I read about all this machine learning BS. Had no idea cars do that these days...

    thanks for the reply,ya know i did read that somewhere and i think it was in this forum about exactly what your saying and i guess i would like to get that confirmed. i'm not sure what a salesman's answer is going to be, but i'm assuming a service adviser or mechanic would be able to give an honest,toyota informed answer.so maybe i'll just go and see what kind of deal i can get and get some confirmation on that. if you don't mind me asking how is mpg, i realize you have the manual but i see your in my region and that makes it a comparable scenario. besides above are you happy with the 16 and is there anything else you have noticed,good or bad ?

    I had no idea cars did that. They are setup to learn your driving pattern and style. So what happens when you decide to sell the truck 3 years from now to someone with a total different driving style. I guess the buyer is SOL.

    My mileage is still improving through break in so it's tough to say. The gearing on the manual is different than auto and will very much affect highway driving. I would search around this forum a bit.

    Some people believe that the transmission may have been programmed to avoid the vibration range of 1900 to 2300 rpm. Conspiracy? It is plausible. How could the engineers miss the mark on transmission mapping by that much? Or it could be mapped that way to give more mpg, but either way, it seems to "learn it's way out of it."

    If they were smart, their machine learning could tell if you could tell if there was a vibration and then avoid it, à la VW.
