Previous owner jacked up oil pan

    So yesterday when I was jacking up the front end of my truck to install my Spidertrax spacers, I noticed that the oil pan had an indentation in it exactly the same size as the cup on a typical floor jack. It looks like some one tried to jack it up under the oil pan:facepalm:. The indentation is probably 1/2" in but there aren't any cracks or leaks. Is this something I need to worry about? How much would a new oil pan be? Is it a simple unbolt and rebolt/change oil job? What about the torque specs on the oil pan? Is thread locker needed?

    i wouldn't worry about it if there is no leaking. if you go to sell it soon i would recommend replacing it tho.

    How much would a replacement be?

    I don't like the fact that there will be two small spots where the oil won't drain all the way due to the indentation

    about 60 bucks alot cheaper then i thought. i would probably replace it now.

    1) Take off the helmet and prove it! :p Although given your choices in transportation and mods, I'm not sure if it matters.

    2) You've heard already above that if it's not leaking don't spend any time on it, but you also need to watch out for where the oil pump pickup is in relation to the dents. If the pickup is in the area of the dent, oil pickup and pressure can be affected. Not sure myself where the pickup is, or where you're dents are, but I would be spending some time finding that info out.

    Yeah, you can't just get on here and claim you are hot without proving it. That's just not fair.

    And I would watch for leaks and leave it alone. That's pretty dumb to jack it up there. Could it have been a rock? Are there other scratches around it?

    Off topic but somewhat related, check your engine mounts next time you're under your truck. They're not exactly designed to support the weight of the truck, especially in the direction the forces would have been applied if the front of the truck was actually lifted off the ground by the oil pan.

    back to bone stock.
    depends on if the truck was actually lifted. i bet the oil pan dented before any tire came off the ground.

    i would fix it...my personality wouldnt allow me any peaceful sleep knowing there was some stupid damage to the pan. ESPECIALLY if i did the damage.

    Just bang it out with a hammer :D

    Seriously though, I doubt much oil is getting left behind with a little indentation. You can take it off and really do straighten it out with a hammer. That way you don't have to buy a new one. Just a gasket. As someone else already said, check the engine mounts.

    Maybe it was taken to Jiffy Lube by the previous owner.

    I would just replace it, the OEM oil pan costs $50 at the dealer. I was gonna replace mine cause the threads got stripped but I just took it off and took it to a machine shop and rethreaded it with a bigger bolt. BTW the oil pan doesn't have an OEM paper gasket, you have to use the liquid gasket in the tube (that is what was used originally).

    ... I would deffinatly replace it, without hesitation. I'm not sure on this motor, but on previous cars I've had, denting the oil pan like that can cause oil starvation for some cylindars, which could lead to a hell of a lot more costly repairs than a $60 oil pan, gasket, oil change, and an hour or so time... It's a cheap insurance policy. That, and it'd be out of the back of your head wondering if it could be causing damage.

    The dent is in the center of the oil pan.

    no scratches around it....definitely an impression from a jack

    They dont show any sort of gasket in that illustration....usually they will show it, or at least note to seal it with something like a high temp RTV sealant. Am I missing something?

    Should I use something like RTV high temp silicone? How much should I use? I really don't want excess silicone inside the oil pan.
