I can say that i never ever like pulling my front skid..ever haha Bell pans can be designed so they drop pretty easily though.

That back bolt mount is a PITA. Sucks to get it in more then take it out really.

Are you doing it yourself? the regear?

You can't drive without a front diff. You need the CV axles installed to hold your wheel hubs on.

Noooooo, I'm dropping the diff and gears off at Toyota Monday morning. And that was the exact bolt that gave us trouble. Ended up just unbolting the entire mount it sits on, after which the diff damn near just fell out.

Ohhh that's nice! Mind if I ask what company you are working for? You said your in the gas fields and I am going to transfer up to Wyoming for petroleum engineering here in a couple semesters! Then hopefully I can come back to Colorado and work!

I'll shoot you a pm. I'm a scientist, not an engineer. We have two PEs on staff, otherwise the rest of us have backgrounds in soils, wetland ecology, bio, similar shtuff.

Whiskey bends. Take an angle grinder with cutoff wheel and cut %90 through on the outside of the bend. Then grab some big adjustable wrenches and bend it to the angle you want and then weld where you just cut.

Planning on doing my regear soon. My 3rd should be here Wednesday! I may put my front in before it gets here and just leave the driveshaft out.

It is possible. I have a set of just the end of the cv that fits in the hub to keep pressure on the bearings. Drove around for probably a month without a front diff.

Finally did the diff breather relocation mod. This was super easy and non-time consuming. Total install cost was $22 and 30 minutes of my time.

Here's a write up of what I did:

These are all the parts I used. I found everything I needed at Autozone, except for the small breather/filter looking thing; I found that at Orielly's. It seems like everyone uses a genuine Toyota part for the adapter that threads into the diff, however the part I found works just as well in my experience. You may notice I have the 5/16" fuel hose (8') and a 4" segment of 1/4 hose. This is because the threaded adapter needed a 5/16 hose while the breather only needed 1/4. A simple 5/16-1/4 took care of that problem.
    image.jpg
Step 1:Locate oem breather on the diff. and unscrew it.
    image.jpg
Step 2: Thread in the new adapter. Notice the stock breather isn't threaded in completely, so I threaded the new one in the same distance.
    image.jpg
Step 3: Slide the hose over the adapter and tighten a hose clamp over it.
    image.jpg
Step 4: Run the hose up to the fuel door area and make sure you leave enough extra length near the diff to avoid ripping it out on those wheelin' days.
    image.jpg
Step 5: Unscrew your gas cap and remove the plastic insert inside the fuel door (there should be four 8mm screws holding it on). Once the screws are removed, just secure the fuel inlet with one hand and shimmy the plastic insert around it. Run the hose out of the fuel door.
    image.jpg
    image.jpg
Step 6: Find a spot on the plastic insert to drill a hole through which the hose will run. I drilled mine near the top to keep the breather out of the way of the gas cap. Here's where I had to change from 5/16 to 1/4" hose to accommodate the breather size.
    image.jpg
    image.jpg
Step 7: Run the hose through, attach the breather, and hose clamp it.
    image.jpg
Step 8: Make sure your fuel door is able to shut completely. If it shuts, nice work, you're done. If not, maybe try pulling the hose through a little more to allow the clamp on the door to fully shut around its little knob thing.

My wife has been in oil and gas (administrative) for 8 years here in CO, her company has laid just about everyone off. I'm sure things can change in a few semesters, but when you have the chance you might want to consider another field, or a minor. This is the worst she's seen it in her time in the industry. Good luck, my work deals with the industry and I've seen much the same. When times are good they're good, but when it gets like this, which happens every few years boy it's rough.

Yeah and that's why I too am questioning it! I'm thinking about environmental engineering (no I'm not a tree hugger) lol but maybe a mechanical engineer!

Thanks! I built it back in 2012 and I'm hoping to build a new one this week. I have a few photos on my build thread BroTaco Build.
