i bought a 05 tacoma about a year ago .never had a reason to use the 4 wh drive took the truck to toyota to have it checked for the recall they fixed the cruise that was on the recall list .while the truck was in the shop i had them ck the differential fulid. they advised for me to do a fluid change . i decided to try out the 4 wh drive .when i shift the selector to 4hi nothing happens when i shift it to 4 lo the light blinks when i switch back to 2wh hi the light keeps blinking until i shut the truck off .when i restart it stays off until i switch it back to 4wh llow and have to go thur the steps again

    Auto or manual trans?
Auto trans you have to be in neutral (Possibly with foot on brake?) to go into 4 low, manual you have to have the clutch to the floor and speed less than 5 MPH.
If you select 4 hi and let the vehicle roll it should engage.

Oh, and blinky light means it's not engaging.

Are you shifting it while it is in neutral?

If I recall correctly, I remember reading in my manual to engage the front diff periodically to keep everything lubed and in working order. I don't recall if it referred to mileage or time. Just don't do it on pavement as you can break things if you start turning. Better to do it on the dirt.

You can do it on dry pavement, you just have to make sure your on a relatively straight road, not making 90 degree turns onto side streets and such.

You have to engage 4hi first in order to engage into 4lo. ?? From 4hi you should be at complete stop with your foot on the brake pedal then select 4lo. Maybe??

    This.

You'll have the best results going in and out of 2 - 4hi while rolling. Keep the speed reasonable, some suggest below 35. You need to be stopped completely to get in and out of 4 low. Man trans - clutch pushed in and brake pedal too , auto trans - neutral with brake pedal pushed.

    To put it in 4LO:

    Automatic Transmission -
    1. Put it in 4HI
    2. Come to a stop
    3. Put the truck in Neutral
    4. Switch the knob to 4LO
    5. Put the truck in Drive and roll forward

When it beeps, it means you didn't do the steps in the right order or you missed a step. Usually "Put the truck in Neutral" is the forgotten step. I don't know what the procedure is for a manual transmission.

Oops! Misread your last post. Thought you got the actuator replaced and 4HI working. Nevermind. Can you manually engage 4HI? There's a thread with instructions here somewhere.
