Well shit. I'd probably go for the rebuild too. Like you said you never know what you're getting into with a used engine. Although a 4.0 would be pretty badass in Baby T :stirthepot:

I'm also confused as to where/when/how rust came into play. I feel like you would have really had to suck in some moisture at some point to cause that. Very odd.

Sorry to hear about this scenario but you know it will be done and complete and up to spec. It will sting for a little bit but hopefully you'll get 150,000 miles out of the rebuild.

Happy Birthday Ash! Sometimes I think I should have had my old truck's motor rebuilt instead of putting a remanufactured motor. I feel like I keep repairingor replacing little things on it. Good luck with the rebuild.

Bummer man..also...wtf? that is super weird. Kinda a shame you didn't chance toyota actually. Because that sounds defective to me. Not a sucking in dirt issue.

If its not that bad then a bore job should do it and new pistons and you'll be good. Hopefully anyways.

Its a huge wtf. I wish I took my camera for pictures. It would have been a fight with toyota though. There was some gunk in the intake that they would have been able to say was an outside force that could have caused it.

I think you're still able to follow up with toyota given that you're having the work done at a shop now. They may cover some of the cost, at the cost of a lot of paperwork. My mother had a brake part fail on her car causing $800 dollars of repairs and requiring 2 new tires. The mechanic made a nice write up and she submitted it through toyota and got two new tires and a repair voucher.

I was planning on it. I am going to ask the machinist to take pictures of the damages for me. After all is said and done I was going to write a brief letter explaining the situation, how I was treated, what the damage was, and the cost to fix. Not expecting a refund but maybe the letter will be acknowledged in some way.

The thing that pisses me off about this is the lack of reason. If someone could say it happened because I did this or the dealer did not do this, I would have closure and move on. Right now it just seems like my streak of bad luck continues.

The guy was talking about how sweet it would be to supercharge it.

Once this is paid off I think thats probably the next mod. Other than a snorkle. That shit is being put on asap.

Yeah, 90% sure that wasn't my problem and the dust got through the afe dry filter. Nothing ever got past the stock one. I might just get a inline pre cleaner and see how that works.

Thanks, I tend to handle stressful situations well. I would be lying if this hasn't kept me up at night or distracted me from school. Made the decision to sell bruiser today. I want to keep the cruiser but when my truck is done I wan't to get straight back into saving. I have a few close friends in need of a vehicle so Ill start with them and sell at the price I got it for. If not, Ill raise it a bit and see what I can get.

Def want a land cruiser in the future. It's been a fun vehicle to drive around.

Dropped the first $1000 off with the shop today to get parts ordered and things moving. He had the whole engine apart and walked me through it. Piston 4 rings were shattered. The wear on the other 3 pistons was perfect. He got into the rust a bit and the cylinder wall is damaged but nothing that can't be bored out.

Glad I went with this guy. He is damn good at what he does and I like that he takes the time to walk me through everything. He is also going to be taking pictures of the damage for me and Ill post those when I get them. Ill be working on writing a letter to toyota corp about this. Doubt it will resolve anything but this is BS. There is no reason for broken piston rings with the way the other parts look. Everything looks great otherwise.

Yep. I believe he said 20 over. Gonna basically be a new engine except for the timing components.
