So the Water main to my house broke Friday morning. Back in the 50s when my neighborhood was built they decided to run the water main and sewer lines through the backyard, at the point of the property line between the back to back neighbors, rather then the street. In fact the water shutoff to my house is in the neighbors yard and I have an easement to get to it. The branch lines to each house come from this main through the backyard, where trees and bushes grow, into your house. I found out they also used galvanized pipe...

Anyway, my line really started leaking late Thursday night. I have a feeling, judging from the pictures, that it had been leaking for some time. Damn galvanized pipe lookes like swiss cheese.

Today was the first day the construction crew could get out to fix it. Based on what friends have told me I think they are giving me a great deal but wanted to hear from others. Have you had a water main replaced? Are you in the trade? What is the typical cost per linear foot to run a new water line from a main to a house (PVC tied into copper, roughly 55-60 feet)?

You can see the leaves on the ground through the holes in the pipe:

I think cost really depends on where you live. Here in Mississippi, I ran ~ 1,600 foot of 2" PVC from the main to my house. It cost ~ $.75 or $1,200.

I also have a place in another state. 750 foot cost $3,700 (+$1,875 for the meter/base). We did need to break through some stone in the bottom of a creek bed. It was only 1" PVC.

This is like comparing apples to oranges, but we're having our main sewer line done this week.

100 feet, under the driveway, with a hill and a big tree in the middle isn't cheap. I don't want to deal with the excavation, so we're going with trenchless repair and the lowest bid was 7k.....
