Hill start assist control

When I am on a steep grade and go to accelerate, I'm assuming the HAC kicks in and that is what is making this noise. But is it suppose to make the clicking noise? I can't figure it out, I'm still trying to understand the HAC feature because I have never dealt with this before in a vehicle.

On my Frontier there was a switch to enable hill start. How does it activate on the 16 Taco? Is it 4wd only? On the Nissan it was helpful in steep roads because it could be used in 2wd.

 

My truck is an auto as well. The hill holding assist thing just works automatically. I stop on a hill and let of the brakes and it doesn't roll back. When I take off, there is no noise.

 

Yes, when I go from brake to gas it rolls back and makes the noise.

 

I'll go test it again later, maybe there is something that I'm missing. I'm just not use to this feature and have never had it in a previous vehicle. I've driven a 71 bronco until this point.

 

Definitely no noise. If I am on a hill and let off the brake the truck will just sit there. Push the gas pedal and away it goes. The manual does say not to use it for more than 2 seconds, don't know if that is related.

 

on really steep hills
that is what it does. it doesn't hold you in one spot, it holds, then creeps, then holds...etc


all the time the brake controller is going apeshit

on mild hills it doesn't kick in at all....but real steep, yep, this is what goes on.

I should have clarified better. I appreciate the insight, smaller slopes don't have this problem. It's the real steep hills where I'm seeing this, and I have a stoplight on a very steep hill down the road I live on. Thus this has happened more frequently. Thanks!

 

in this case Hill Start Assist is not active, this is your automatic tranny holding you. hill start assist is noisy

 

From the manual and comments here it sounds like the hill start is automatic. No switches like in the Frontier.

yup it's automatic. I was looking for it for a few weeks and was like...umm, mine must
be missing or broken or deactivated.

nope. went and found a real steep grunt and went up it and stopped and let off gas. it crept back 2 inches then brake controller
went into overtime, stopped me, waited, crept me back, waited....it is a true 'assist' and not a 'I'll pin you right here forever'
and you know it is active by the chattering [unless you have stereo blasting]

 

If you are not shifting out of "D," but just coming to a stop and starting again, the HAC isn't kicking in.

Some excerpts from the manual:
Operating conditions of hill-start assist control
When the following four conditions are met, the hill-start assist control will
operate:
●The shift lever is in a position other than P or N (when starting off forward/
backward on an upward incline).
●The vehicle is stopped.
●The accelerator pedal is not depressed.
●The parking brake is not engaged.
■Automatic system cancelation of hill-start assist control
The hill-start assist control will turn off in any of the following situations:
●The shift lever is moved to P or N.
●The accelerator pedal is depressed.
●The parking brake is engaged.
●Approximately 2 seconds elapse after the brake pedal is released.

■When shifting the shift lever
●On vehicles with an automatic transmission, do not let the vehicle roll
backward while the shift lever is in a driving position, or roll forward while
the shift lever is in R.
Doing so may cause the engine to stall or lead to poor brake and steering
performance, resulting in an accident or damage to the vehicle.

 

Have this on my 4runner and think it kind of lame. Not sure if it's the same, but kind of sounds like it on the Tacoma. Mild hills it works fine after you firmly depress the brake pedal then back off it will hold the truck. On steeper hills it will roll back and make the clicking noise. I don't like to sit on a hill with my foot off the brake as it seems I'm less in control. So I don't use it much. Feel safer keeping my foot on the brake and would not trust it on a very steep hill AT All. Could be more useful with a manual shift I would think.

 

What the excerpts you posted describe is precisely coming to a stop and restarting again. That is when it is useful. It's not meant to hold you there, just give your foot time to move from brake to gas without rolling backwards into the car behind you.

One thing I've noticed is that if I am on a hill and move from P to D and don't touch the pedals the truck will hold it's position without making the clicking noises. However, if i am trying to parallel park on a steep hill I will get the clicks. I'm thinking it's because I haven't come to a complete stop and therefore the HAC hasn't engaged.

 

Your noise is normal. My 14 does same.
