    Hi everyone,

I picked up some 4 Runner black steel wheels for my Tacoma, and I'm thinking about painting them white before mounting my new tires. These are brand new wheels that have never been mounted so painting them should be fairly simple.

Would you still suggest scuffing them up before painting them? Or, would a good cleaning be good enough? What about a primer coat? If I decide to just stick with the black, what about a basic clear coat to give some extra protection? Anything else to consider?

    Thanks!

I would powder coat them. The coating bonds to the wheel and will help them from chipping or pealing.

Check out skistoy's thread "Painting Stock Rims Easy"

He did a great job. Lots of pro's and cons. Also, touches on powdercoating.

Cool, I'll check that thread out. I had looked into powder coating, but it was going to cost $90 per wheel, which was the same as what I paid for the steelies. I didn't think it really made sense at that price.

Spending $90 per wheel to get my alloy's re-finished, on the other hand, is something I would definitely consider.
