I am having hard shifting (banging) from 1st to 2nd gear at slow speeds/rpms. I took it to dealer to check fluid levels. They said it was ok and could not repeat the problem. I took it back a few days later and had the tech go for a ride with me. Needless to say the trans hard shifted for me and the tech said whoa..thats not right. So OK good now we are getting somewhere. They took the truck right in and gave me something to drive.
Next day they called. They reflashed the transmission and topped off the fluid. Told me to drive it for 100 miles and if it was not better they would probably have to replace the trans.
3 days later shift points seemed a little higher but, still banging into 2nd gear. Called my dealer and they said they would get approval for a new trans. I was informed today that the new transmission was going to be a remanufactured one. WTF...a $39,000 truck with a remanufactured transmission.
    Looking for some input.

re-manufactured isn't necessarily bad. They may reuse a casing and rebuild it with all new parts. Would you want one that came off of an assembly line, mass produced like the one that failed; or one that someone has gone through in detail to fix and make right? No guarantees, but it could turn out to be a plus also.

thisssssss. They put REMAN trans/engines etc in 60k King Ranch F150s, so a little tacoma wont be any different.

Not sure what the price of the truck has to do with anything but interest nonetheless. Not sure if you're aware but $39,000 isn't all that much for a new car these days unfortunately.

We had a transmission issue in my wife's enclave a few weeks ago. It had 65,000 and was out of warranty. GM put a brand new transmission in it at no cost to us.

Good luck with it. I wouldn't take it. It may be "fine" but just like you're thinking,
I didn't buy a used truck, I bought a new truck for a new truck price and expect
new parts, if I wanted used parts, I'd buy a used truck.

Dealer/Toyota has to stand by it regardless so I wouldn't worry about it

Hard to believe there's enough market for a rebuilt anything yet on the new Taco drivetrain though.....what other vehicles in Toyota's lineup share the same tranny?

Or is it even different for '16? It's got another gear, correct?

you would be surprised the amount of REMAN parts will go into repairing your truck at a future date. Technically, your truck is used when you drive it off the lot, and they do not have to put "new" parts on a used truck

I sell GM transmissions at a dealer and 99.9% of them are remanufactured. Very rarely is there ever a problem.

Also reman can be better than new, with new you may get the same crappy mass produced transmission where a rebuilt one may have updated parts in it.

    Reman is new

Toyota will be doing a lot of this soon if they don't get their ducks in a row with this auto. Funny how I have heard virtually zero complaints with the manual. Lots of guys getting significantly better than EPA-posted MPG too.

Yes, I am fully aware of what $39,000 is in todays car/truck market. I am also aware that a $60,000 truck sold for $38 - 40,000 2 years ago.
I purchase 1 - 2 new vehicles every year. Have owned over 40 cars/trucks. Luckily, This is the first new vehicle I have had a major issue with.
Of course I usually do not keep anything long enough to have a problem.

Foolish me to think that a new truck with 1500 miles should get a new transmission. Especially since it was only a $39,000 truck.

Maybe a "reman" could be more reliable than a new off the line. I don't know. Thats why I was looking for input and opinions

Only the 2016 Tacoma has this trans. Both the 4 and 6 cylinder models use it.

It's getting fixed with an "as good as new or better" part at no cost to you.

    What more do you want?

What kind of Warranty are they offering on the transmission?

Ask for an extended Toyota (not 3rd party) Warranty, with the mileage extended out to 100k miles or so...

At this point a reman is probably the best way to go. The major components will be new, the shell and non critical items will be used. So essentially you are getting a new trans, with the correct amount fluid this time. I would ask about exteneded warranty at no cost, just due to their neglect.

Reman is better than new usually. Hell, you had a new one and it sucked. What would make you want another? Def ask for a throw in warranty, you'll get it. Just make lots of (polite) noise to Toyota.

When I was a kid going to Dairy Queen for an ice cream, they ALWAYS had "mistakes" behind the counter for 25 cents. Delicious mistakes. :D

I assume mistakes happen in production and that's where at least some of the reman units come from. And highly doubtful this is the first trans to fail, they've probably taken plenty back by now.

It'll probably be ok as others have already said one way or another...

BUT, HELL YES I'D WANT A NEW ONE.

Did you buy a remanufactured transmission with the new truck?
