Ok, I purchased a set of flush mounted 4" LED pod lights that I want to install in my rear bumper. Has anyone installed a set of these in a chrome bumper before? I have a new Dremmel tool that I could use if it will do the job. I just need to know what cutting wheel to use on chrome. I don't want the chrome to chip or start rusting once it is done either. What would I use to coat the exposed metal that I do cut? How would I keep the drill bit from "walking" when drilling the mounting holes? Any help would be great! Thanks!!

Cover the area you're working on with several layers of masking tape, it will protect the chrome.

For the drill holes, use a punch to make a divot where the hole needs to be, this will keep it from walking. Also, make the first hole smaller, like 1/8", then use that as the pilot hole for your big hole.

When I did mine, I used a jigsaw with a metal blade, it worked great.

When you're done, paint the edges to protect the metal (color doesn't really matter because you'll be covering it with the lights).

Also, be extra sure you're leaving room between where you're cutting and where the brackets/tow hitch are behind the bumper.

    Capt. Obvious....

Did you wire directly to reverse lights or just to the switch? And if so did you use any diodes to prevent back feed into the stock reverse lights when turned on from the switch?

    Thanks..

I have mine wired independently from the reverse lights. I don't want them coming on and blinding people if I'm just backing up in a parking lot or something. Also, I use them a lot as auxiliary lighting when I'm doing something behind the truck (loading bikes on the trailer, cutting wood, etc.), and I want to be able to use them without having my keys in the ignition.

I mounted LEDs under the rear bumper. I connected into the reverse light wire that is in the trailer hitch harness. No relays, no diodes, nothing, works great. I plan to add an override relay this summer and a dash switch to bring them on while unloading or to flash an idiot behind me if necessary.
