Anyone around here do it? I've been making syrup on and off for about 20 years. Got back into it this year, did about 100 taps and made 30 gallons of product. Hope to double production next year.

    Very nice!
We have a community (Shepherd, Mi) here that the whole town gets involved.

They have started cheating a bit. They are using a reverse osmosis unit to speed up the process dramatically.

I have an RO system. But I have never used it, requires a lot of water and set up. I'm likely going to sell it. With our evaporator we can do 200-300 taps without much trouble. Much more that that and the RO would be nice but I don't wanna collect sap from that many trees anyway. We don't do any tubing, just buckets.

I hear you. They produce a lot of syrup. The RO is well worth it.

They use the RO in the opposite fashion they are intended. The water is stripped from sap and drained away. Basically they are keeping the reject water and dumping the clean water. The reject water is the soon to be maple syrup.

Some members of my family in VT do it. I usually go help when they are ready to collect. That's the fun part anyway.
