I am looking to buy a 2005 tacoma 4x4. When I put it into 4 wheel drive it drives really stiff. in fact at speeds under 10 mph it will stop the truck as if you were pressiing on the brake. Any ideas?

Sounds to me like the front drive line is stiff due to neglect maybe?

You are not turning sharply on asphalt are you? That will definitely stop you.

Almost sounds like different sized tires front to rear. Binding somewhere.

2 wheel drive = no slowing down? Something in the transfer case or front differential is binding, not turning in sync with transmission and rear differential somehow. Test drive in 4 wheel drive with no front drive shaft, no binding, front differential problems.
