This is my first time posting to this forum and I was looking to get some advice. My wife's uncle is selling his 2006 Toyota Tacoma access cab Trd off road. Truck has 80000k miles on it. I owned a 07 Tacoma before and sold in 2011. I love these trucks but it has brought to my attention that there has been a recall on the 2nd gens frames from 05-08 in cold weather states.

My wife's uncle bought it brand new and he lives in upstate New York. He received the recall letter for the frame and had inspected, it passed and was coated with that crc frame coating.

My biggest concern is that Toyota may be incompetent and that this fix might not hold up for the long term. This truck is in great shape other than the tow hitch starting to rust and scale and one of the rims has a fair amount of clear coat that has come off. I looked under the truck and the coating looks like was done well but who knows what kind of BS they sprayed over.

I guess my question is, should I be at all concerned about this? Also he wants 10k for the truck. He also informed be about the spring recall and that toyota checked and passed that as well.

    Thanks this is the truck.

Welcome to TW! That is a steal for that price, especially considering the low miles and it is a TRD off road!

I haven't heard of Toyota covering up any frame replacements that should have been done on the forum. The 2 leaf rears will be pretty worn anyway at 10 years old and can be swapped for someones 3 leaf takeoffs or a better aftermarket spring pack when you are ready to do so.

The specs on that truck, and mine, are almost the exact same. Mine is an '05 with 81,000. The only real difference is that mine has a new frame, and that has a CRC'd frame. Mine I would buy, that one I wouldn't.

We're starting to see more, and more cases of people that had CRC'd frames fail, and being SOL, as Toyota has not offered any extended warranty on them (at least in the US)(In Canada they do give an extended warranty). Haven't figured that one out yet.

Almost sounds to good to be true, and usually if it is, you know what that means.

He does drive it in the winter. But he works for the state and has access to the Dpw equipment and cleans it religously. I contacted him today and he just had the frame inspected for the leaf spring recall on Tuesday of last week and dealership passed him. He also said that the frame was in good shape before they crc 'd the frame. I think it might worth taking the gamble on it considering these trucks go for 16-17k for the same truck. Those links were helpful. I also contacted Colonial Toyota in RI earlier and they said that once the crc coating has been applied and april 1st rolls around you are sol, basically crc and no further action. They also will not replace you frame if your frame was considered "salvageable". There is no extended warranty like the one that was available on the 1st gen tacoma's where after the crc was applied you had an extra 15 years for the frame to go south and they would replace it. Hopefully they remedy this and do it for the 2nd gens as well.

There is NOT an inspection for the rear leaf springs. They must be replaced under the recall.

Maybe you'll be okay, but my frame looked pretty good for a 10 year old truck (replaced last year) as well.

At least check these areas, these are the trouble spots (My old frame):

    Frame1002_zps57b26baa_87e7822d9868cb7e4bda0d2d084c38609b605105.jpg

That's the inside vertical section by the catalytic converters. That's primarily where they fail. As you can see, the rust starts on the inside of the frame, and works it's way out.

As far as the leaf springs go apparently he had them replaced due to one breaking on him before it was considered a "recall" but they still needed to have the dealership inspect it for whatever reason after the fact to make sure everything was copesetic. Maybe I misunderstood him but that's what i got out of it.

Fitz235, as far as those pictures go, you are right it doesn't look bad at all. It definitely is possible that this frame could be the same. Looks like I'll have to do some more research. Thanks.

for $10k you had better snatch it up. Even if at some point the frame does fail, and even with the coating it may, you may get it replaced later. It's a no brainier IMO.
