Recently was contacted by a fellow forum member interested in improving the condition of his 2015 Toyota Tacoma. He brought it by the shop for an evaluation and I found the paint was really not looking its best. The truck was red with widespread swirl marks and for my seinfeld fans out there "a pinkish hue". It was only a year old so I had the feeling the dealer trashed this paint before the owner every had the chance to pamper it (owner was taking care of it since taking delivery).

We discussed the expectations and the budget then agreed to a 2 step paint correction with sealant. The expectation was big improvement without 100% full correction.

Just to be clear - I'm not claiming this is a full correction! There are definitely some leftovers. However, for the budget I think I did pretty well and therefore I'm sharing the results.

When the truck arrived I knocked the usual prep routine:

Wheels cleaned with Shine Supply "Cool Guy"
Tires & wheel wells scrubbed with Shine Supply "Wise Guy)

Vehicle was washed with Optimum "No Rinse" car wash solution

Decontaminated with CarPro TRIX (to remove rust blooms, road tar, and any existing wax or sealant)

This was followed up with the Optimum Opti-Clay towel (medium) with ONR as clay lube, then dried with a waffle weave towel.

First things first - this truck has a lot of trim to cover! So I got busy with the masking tape skills

Started looking over the paint and was reminded of the mess. Brutal!

Did some test spots and settled on the following for my paint correction process

    Griots Boss / Griots GG6 / Porter Cable 7424xp (6, 5, and 3 inch pads respectively)

Shine Supply "Classic Cut" + Megs MF Cutting Pads

Optimum "Hyper Polish" + Lake Country white pads

    Results as follows

That looks excellent. I'm literally in the "research" phase before starting my first real detail job on the truck I got it I'm August and I'm ready to do the full wash, clay, poish, wax job on it.

Question. why do you need to tape off the trim?

Great job! Never heard of Shine Supply products. May have to try out their Trim Shield once my bottle of Ultima Tire & Trim Guard runs out.

Tape off trim to keep from getting polish/wax residue on it. Usually it will stain the trim. One less thing to correct at the end of a detail.

The tacoma has a lot of textured black plastic trim which can stain or discolor from compound or polish. So the masking tape is all about proper prep. Taking the time to ensure that we don't stain all the trim

Highly recommend you look into the Shine Supply product line. I've used many brands over the years and now almost entirely its Shine Supply or Optimum Polymer Technologies.

In fact, I used to use UTTG (ultima trim & tire guard). It was the only thing I used from that line. Shine Supply Trim Shield is very similar serving the same purpose (long lasting trim dressing that does not run off in the rain) and it lasts longer on the shelf (I had a couple bottles of UTTG separate after sitting too long). Usually I put trim shield in a small 2 oz small then apply with a yellow foam applicator.

That looks great, dude. I'm in NYC and would be happy to drive out for a freshening up. What's a general estimate for a job like the one you posted on the '15?

If you like Meguiar's M105, you will absolutely fall in love with their M101. It corrects as well or better than the M105, but with waaay less dusting. I actually stopped using the M105 since trying the M101.

Do you have any experience with the BOSS 5.5" pads on a GG6? I have some in the 3" size for my GG3. The white feel super stiff. I'm wondering if I'd ever have a need for that stiff of a pad (for AIO's and general swirl removal, no deep scratches).
