2006 V6 4x4 180,XXX mi turned off while going about 65mph. Oil light came on as I was coasting in neutral. While coasting I attempted to turn on and it wouldn't turn over. While waiting for my ride, I cranked it and it fired up. But sounded and felt like it was about to die and sounded like it needed the gas pedal pumped to prevent it from dying. It died. Just cranked and cranked. ADVICE?! Alt? Batt? Sensor? Should I listen for fuel pump to kick on when I turn key? My Toyota buddy mechanic said its prob my alt. My engine light came on last month. And again 3 days ago but turned off. Autozone read said it was the catalytic converter sending a code.

If the alternator fails the battery won't charge and soon you won't be able to start it.

Would a bad alt cause it to shut off? I've replaced alt before and had them drain my battery on a jeep and mustang. But never had a vehicle die on the hwy. Thought if that were the case (bad alt), it wouldn't start after I would've parked it. That's always been my experience and found out but again. Never while driving....

I don't have any experience with vehicles shutting off as you describe but I assume if it was the alternator the battery would be too dead to start the truck.

I had a friend show up to try and jump it. It cranked but didn't turn over. And we sat there for a good while. Thinking bout pulling both off and checking them at auto store. Hoping it's just alt. Thanks.

The only time my truck died while driving was when the spark plugs were bad... Or maybe it was the coils... Idk but it was one or the other. I'd check those.

IT WAS MY FUEL PUMP. $850 out the door. Apparently it's a pain to get to. Thanks for the feedback.
