My old Land cruiser is at the end of its life. So, I need to sell it. I want to have something reliable, dependable, decent fuel economy and also is easy to work on. I am a former automotive mechanic and still have most of my tools. I have been looking at buying a first Generation Toyota Tacoma as a replacement vehicle. I have read the four cylinder version is great on fuel....but is it reliable? What about pulling power? What is consider a high risk engine with to many miles? As for why I want a Tacoma VS say a minivan. What are the "beware" aspects of to look for for a Tacoma made in the 2000s? I go by http://www.carcomplaints.com/Toyota/Tacoma/ for the reliability index based on how many care complaints against the vehicle.

Anyway, get back to me when you can. I may have to buy and import it into Canada if the price is right on the south side of the border.

It's less Tacoma and more mod
    Howdy,
I'd say the 4cyl 1st Gen is pretty reliable. I had the head rebuilt on mine but that's because the previous owner neglected it pretty badly. Ran like a top even with the head out of spec and now it has more power than ever after the work. The 4cyl has a reputation for dependability just like the 6cyl. If you have any specific questions feel free to ask.

this is good to know. All I care about is reliability, lost/medium cost for parts. I am going to do a repost on first generation Tacoma and see what the other people have to say about it.
