Adding amp/sub to JBL amplified system??

Hey guys, I am trying to install a 12" 2ohm pioneer shallow mount behind the seats in my doublecab with stock JBL amplification. I want to keep the JBL headunit because I like it and dont have enough money to upgrade yet. I have searched the forums extensively on this topic and my only question is where to get the signal for a line out converter to give my amp RCA signals?

I need recommendations on a good high to low converter for under $50 and where to grab the signal for it.

It seems like on the stock amp there is a connector with input from the head, a 4-pin connector going out to the JBL 8" sub, a connector going to the front 6x9's/8" sub (lows), and one for the tweets and back doors (highs) Should I try to get the signal from behind the headunit, or try to get it from one of these connectors going from the stock amp. Any help is appreciated here fellas and i can get a picture of the amp if needed.

You're in for one hell of a PITA. My 07 JBL system I do believe is slightly different than yours, but I replaced my head unit and had to buy the digital adapter to convert the signal from the head unit to the amplifier. I think the adapter goes both ways, to-from. Mine cost me around 50 bucks.

On the other hand you could stick with stock amplifier however, the rear speakers have a high pass filter on them... so its kinda pointless. One of these days I want to gut my system, but it will be some considerable rewiring. The biggest upgrade that I think you could do to a JBL system is upgrade the head unit. I have a considerable amount of bump and really good control over the sound quality. Its not too bad!! Shakes the rear view mirror a bit at least Just make sure you buy a decent head unit with a good EQ on it. I don't think you could get decent sound quality with a standard 3 band EQ on a cheap radio. I'm currently using a Premier HU. It's older but does a great job.

Double check and make sure the JBL system in your model year is the same. Theres very little about these radios but I'm about 80% positive it will work for yoru system.

I am in the same boat as you and i bought an output converter for my 2009 tacoma i just dont know how to install it?

 

i believe the output converter i bought cost 25 and is made by metra

 

Alright fellas I did it I bought a LOC for 30.95 shipped from davidnavone.com because it is a great LOC.

I took out the JBL sub, took the stock amp and moved it to a different location, and pulled the signal for my sub from the 4-pin connector for the stock JBL sub. So with the four wires on the N-RHL2 I put each one into a pin on that 4 pin connector (this will work since each channel on the converter can handle 50 watts and the stock sub has 2 voice coils with about 40 watts each. I plugged the RCA's in to my amp and everything worked perfectly the first time - the taco is bangin with my RF P3SD412 in a ported box! Pics to come in a few days hope this helped

Ok man I will do a writeup in the next couple days if I can find some time. I know this would help a ton of people who want to add some bump, or an amp the their JBL amplified system. It was actually a really fun install!

 

Hmm maybe it was a problem with earlier model years, but my 09 stock amp is a champ so far and you can unplug the stock sub w/ no problems. I still have it powering my door speaks until i can do a full speaker/amp upgrade.

 

This was on a 2009? If so how did u know which wire on the sub harnes was positive/negative?

1. aftermarket deck
2. jbl harness to keep the amp for door speakers (relocate)
3. new subs, amp pulling signals from new deck

never thought the JBL system would make things so complicated!
