3rd Gen TRD air filter thread

I couldn't find much good info on these so I figured I would start a thread for us that got one intentionally or not.

How do u like it?
Did u order it?
Are u going to keep it?
What are u going to use to clean it?
Do u think the dealership will clean it properly or try to replace it on our free oil changes?


I personally don't like this style filters. I have read multiple horror stories of them dusting engines on Polaris RZRs . But my truck came with one as an option. So I have been trying to decide weather to take it out and sell it while it is still new, or at least keep it thru my ToyCare 25K free services to see how the dealership handles it. Don't know yet.

 

I have one - been using K&N filters for 25 years. Clean em with the cleaning kit 1-2x yearly depending on driving conditions. It takes 15 minutes to remove spray with cleaner rinse off, let sit and dry ... re-install = done. 10HP on my butt dyno too! The truck purrs a little too when I hit the gas pedal, of course adding to the butt dyno effect.

 

In my technical training at trade school we had a class on KN filters. They highly recomended us to not use them as the only way to get more air thru a paper filter in a given area is to have bigger gaps in the paper. Bigger gaps means more dirt getting thru. In most cases if you did the proper maintenance on them which most dont then you might be ok as the oil film on the paper catches alot of dirt before it passes thru the filter. In knowing how the filter works I wouldnt touch it with a ten foot pole on my truck.

 

Reason I use them; oh and haven't had to replace an engine yet in those 25 years, is the price of the cleaning kit VS price of throw out filter - that's it. Call me cheap... it is a performance filter they work fine. Probably your trade school shys away is due to folks that don't do the required maintenance or don't do it properly IF they do it at all. My opinion.... TIFWIW and price paid.

 

Is the TRD filter oiled?

 

It looked like the standard K&N drop in... I thought it was but now that I'm thinking about it maybe not.
