Finally broke down and upgraded my '03 Doublecab 4x4 with a modern head unit. After much research I settled on the Pioneer AVH-4100NEX Flagship model for a couple reasons and really happy with the results.

    1. By far the most important to me was the ability to set the screen angle to my line of sight. This model allows the screen motor to power up and move to the desired position when powered on. Since Toyota placed the stereo way too low in the truck design a standard fixed angle display sucks when trying to view from above in the drivers seat.

    2. Apple Car play and Android auto - Most if not all new 2016+ car models are coming out with support for mobile connectivity and is the "current" tech. This model supports both and no finicky app mirroring crap to deal with. Its awesome..

    3. Incredible sound.. blown away how much better my stock speakers sound and thump. Wow.

For those of you looking to upgrade those points might be useful.

Also bought a dual USB panel mount extension cable for connecting phones and devices to the HU. Removed one of the existing 12v aux light plugs and fit this in its place.. presto! Took it one step further and threw in a backup cam because they are so cheap and might be useful for when the bed is loaded up and view is obstructed.

Pictures aren't great... had this truck for 13 years and had ALOT of fun with it so she aint lookin' so pretty.

"Screen motor" sounds like another term for "expensive fix"

Do yourself a favor and spend about $150 in sound deadener and do your doors and rear wall.

$700+ in audio upgrades only to keep the resonance of a rattling shitbox cab makes no sense either. :)

Thanks for posting this. Been half assed looking to replace my factory unit, but like you, thought it was stupid in the shitty location. I love the tilted screen.

Can you use Google maps with that HU? I would love to hear and see directions, mostly hear, thru the HU and not my phone. If you got a PIC of maps I would love to see that.

    Thanks

Installed my extended rear brake line today. The threads from the steel line didn't like the threads in the new hose very much and they began cross threading. After multiple careful attempts at threading, I just decided to thread the old line back in and link the new hose to the old one. The bleeding seems to have gone well also, however I'm still a little nervous about it.

Hey everyone, I'm redoing the interior of my truck, similar to madjik's. I was wondering how you get the interior light cover off so I can paint it. Thanks for the help!

I'm thinking my truck is getting past the point where sound deadening makes sense.

If you're going to leave it like that, I would at least zip tie it out of the way of the driveshaft and getting caught elsewhere, but I wouldn't leave it like that.
