I don't think I'd purchase an auto after reading all these complaints about the trans. Someone should take a video of the hunting trans..

 

I think you should test drive one and decide for yourself. There are many people very happy with their transmissions. If you like it get it, if not, don't, but the opinions on here are a mish-mash of all kinds of stuff with a hearty helping of bias from all sides. Yours is what matters.

 

Mine is perfect. I'm not a cruise control guy, so it stays in the gear I want it to be in. Everyone has their opinion, that's mine.

 

no hunting problems here either.

 

my truck has gotten much better with more miles. even when I cruise it now stays in high gear much more often on my daily commute. my only hunting problem now is that it still isn't turkey hunting season, and still a while before Bow season starts...

 

leverage is torque. Torque is rxF. the pivot is above the pedal. You have more control on the bottom of the pedal

 

With all due respect, i think a lot of you guys who are coming up with "fixes" for these transmission issues are really reaching. You're in denial. Just be honest with yourself and acknowledge the transmission is fucked up. It' has nothing to do with where you place your foot! It also has nothing to do with using cruise control or driving in the mountains as others have suggested! It's because there is a flaw with the transmission!

 

Still calling b.s.! I've owned manuals for years, and have driven automatics and one even had a CVT (which I actually liked once I "figured it out" and could get incredible mileage with it), so I think I'm not just going into this being stubborn or ignorant. Like I said, I've been able to milk 25mpg out of the truck in the past. I know what it wants and likes. the fact that I am getting 12-13 mpg now regardless of if I'm on the freeway or around town and he trans issues that I am now having that weren't there before are not because of my driving habits!

 

I agree, but...I had a Hummer H3 (First 4x4 that was not a Toyota in 32 years, oh what a mistake) for 5 years. It did the same thing. I purchased a reprograming kit that changed the shifting points on the transmission. That fixed 95% of the issue and also increased my gas mileage by 2.5 MPG...I hated the truck because other stuff broke on it contently, but the shifting and mileage problems were fixed with a new program.

 

And it also seems like many of us are having issues. I think you're confused in thinking that I think every '16 Tacoma is messed up, which it's not, but you cannot deny that there are more than a few of us who are pretty much having the exact same issues. That also does not mean your truck is one of them, sir.

 

You're in denial if you don't think elevation impacts performance.

 

I live at sea level now. The truck performed better in Colorado where I bought it. And I'm now getting the same MPG at sea level without a trailer compared to what I was getting towing 3,000lbs from Denver to San Francisco via I80. So figure that one out.

And my statement and nothing to do with performance. My point was elevation should not cause a transmission to slip and shift shitty.

 

My gear hunting went away as the miles went up, and that was mainly on uphills and downhills. First time through the Grapevine, transmission was shifting up and down like crazy. I'd just gas through it and my transmission eventually learned. After the break-in period, I'd use cruise control and it didn't have any issues going up or down hill.

 

Like 3d said above, go try one out. I have no issues with the AT, runs great,
drives great, no gear hunting, no clunking into gear, no hesitation.

I haven't had any problems with my transmission so far. It shifts when its supposed to and has power when I need it. I have no problem passing people up the grades here doing 75 mph at 3000 rpms as I fly by everyones vehicles dogging it up the grade.

 

I'm genuinely curious exactly what this gear hunting is I keep hearing about, as my transmission performs fine...does it mean the truck is constantly changing gears all over the place?
