I have done both methods and the spring compressors are just a pain in the ass. This method is way faster and easier imo and as long as you are careful you should be fine.

My OEM front shock had a hex "hole" inside the top of the the shaft. Insert an allen wrench and you can keep the shaft from rotating which you unscrew the nut.

Thanks for replying to my question.

I like to DIY, instead of paying someone to do things that are within my abilities.

You should be able to do it. I've never changed front shocks before, the YouTube Video explains it nicely and I didn't have any problems.

    Tips:
    1. Spray the upper shaft/nut with a penetrant for several days before you start the de-install/re-install. Makes life easier on day of install.
    2. Safety first: Use a jackstand and chock your wheels
    3. Use a sharpie to mark the locations of your alignment cams, so you can get it back to same position, which is close enough to spec to get you to your alignment shop.
    4. Use a torque wrench. Have ready the torque specs for the various nuts and bolts you will be loosening: Lower ball joint, Cam bolts, Lower shock mount bolt, upper shock nut

It gives you a better feeling when you do it yourself too!

Thanks and that reminds me how important preparation is on diy jobs, which also adds to a fewer problems.

I did this same exact thing today, and it worked flawlessly. Took me about an hour each side. To grip the top, I used a 7mm wrench. Mine didn't have the allen key hole. Just make sure you mark your LCA alignment tabs with sharpie before hand. Mine got all out of whack, but thanks to the sharpie I was able to drive just fine afterwards!

Thanks, I called the dealership to get an estimate on just labor and I was quoted $156 on the rear and $310 on the front + $89.99 for an alignment. I just can't justify spending $466 on labor, when it's within my ability and the good feeling of doing it yourself too.

That's absurd! Especially for the rear! To change the rear is literally 4 bolts. Took me about 30-40 min. total. I say go for it.

Check out "taco lean". It's a very common problem.

Takes about an hour each side for the fronts if you prep ahead of time. Even shorter amount of time for the rears.
