Wheel spacers. Good or bad?

Was looking at some Spidertrax wheel spacers. Any pros or cons to using them? Would they work well with 17" trd sema wheels (-4mm offset wise)? I tow and haul quite a bit. Would their use hinder these capabilities?

Suspension is currently oem trd sport but will be lifting to 2.5" soon.

I run 265/70/17 bfg ko2 and want to make them stick out tiny bit more

I've read they could be a cause of the hubs wearing out prematurely.

 

Guess I should have stated that I don't do any heavy wheeling it's the towing and hauling I'm concerned with

 

IMHO they are a looks thing that I prefer to avoid.

In other words, a prime purpose is to correct a problem or create a look that should generally be done by using the proper fitment parts to begin with; in most cases this means proper offset/backspacing/wheel width/tire size.

That said, I have run small ones (3/8") before to create clearance for calipers when I wanted a certain set of OE wheels on a vehicle they were not meant for, so there were no sizing options, and I had no issues with them.

It's just not my 'go to' position.

 

Appreciate the reply. I guess in retrospect I wish I went 285 instead of 265, hence I'm kicking around the idea.

 

Here's a thought. Focus on function first and looks second.

If you have a function problem that 20mm more of tire would fix (doubtful), then consider that the solution when the existing tires are done. If the need for the function correction is immediate, buy new tires, sell the old.

If it's a looks only problem, save your $ and drive on. Could be that by the time you need new tires, the outside-the-body itch has passed.

 

Agreed. I'm running 1.25" and that's not by choice. I'm not a fan of wheel spacers but in order for my 315s to clear my spindle and not rub like crazy in my wheel well, they're a cheap fix.

I've put 60k miles on mine and no issues. I've heard horror stories of snapped lugs or improper installation that lead to death wobbles, etc.

It's blows my mind that some of these young kids that want "stance" are running 5-6 " spacers. So dumb.

 

I have 1" Bora wheel spacers on my truck with 86,000 miles.....No issues. Regardless of which way you go, either wheel spacers OR wheels with more offset, you accomplish the same end....Wider is wider....Wheel spacers don't do anything a wider wheel doesn't as far as "premature wear". Larger/heavier tires/wheels do as much harm as wider wheels or wheel spacers....Pick your poison.

I put spacers on my truck to get clearance (away from UCA's) but the end result is a "look" that I like more. Stock stance was just a tic narrow for my liking. So....Function improved WITH improved form....

 

I don't personally run them, but SO many people here do. I say go for it! Sure there are a few horror stories, but there are also a few horror stories with 5100s yet that's the most popular choice for a strut on here by far. All I'm saying is there are bound to be a few bad apples, but don't let that turn you off of it.

This is true. Going to start looking into some.

 

I forgot to mention that I have aftermarket rims that are 8" wide and 0 offset, which translates into them sticking 1.5" farther out than stock. I couldn't be happier with the stance.

 

Got any pics. If I'm not mistaken the trd sema wheels have 4mm offset and are 17x7 - not sure how much they will be sticking out past the fender.

 

Judging by my calculations, yours already stick out ~.8" more than stock wheels. It all depends on how much more you want them to stick out. I'll snap a pic of mine this morning and throw it up here.

 

Looks great and just how mine stick out without spacers. I think with 1" spacer in place I will be right where I want to be

 

I have the Spidertrax 1.25 spacers with OEM 17" FJ wheels running 285/70/17
I haul my Polaris RZR about every other weekend to the desert and drive my Tacoma M-F to work 46 miles one way. Never had a problem.
IMOO it's not the wheel spacers in themselves that are an issue with the horror stories. They play a part with oversized tires, lifts ect that put stress on the parts.
Sorry I don't have a pic of the truck straight on. They stick out about 2" from the fender.
