I've got an '03 Tacoma 2.4l with 230k miles. Until today it has run like a new truck, and has only needed minor repairs over the years. I just went to start it up... it fired, revved a little, and died right away. After that it seems to crank faster but not start, and when I have someone else turn it over I smell raw gas at the tailpipe.
The first thing that comes to mind is a broken timing chain, but I would have expected it to be making noise before breaking. This motor has always been silent and smooth.
I don't know of a quick way to check this. If that's what it is I'm going to tow it in to be fixed, my days of doing projects like that are pretty much gone. Does it sound like I'm on the right track, and are there other things I should be checking? Any help here will be greatly appreciated.

Yep, probably he chain, and the wife just sent divorce paperwork.

No way to know, gonna not try to internet troubleshoot.

Let us know what a person who can touch the truck besides yourself finds wrong.

Removing the valve cover is not too hard. Thats what it would take to see (or not see) the chain.

Did you touch anything or do any work recently?

Clean the maf sensor and check its connector. That sounds like my symptoms when i forget to plug it back in.

I would expect you'd hear some real bad noises if the timing chain was broken.

If your timing chain is broken I'd expect at least some of your valves are stuck open. If you pressure test each cylinder while cranking you'll know if the valves are still working = chain still in 1 piece.

Remember fuel, spark and compression are required. If you smell fuel then that seems good, check spark, then compression.
