Well I was having the same issues with the tranny as everyone. Took it in they plugged the computer in and said it's ok on fluid I said no check it physically. Yup it was one quart low. Wow what a difference it made. Do yourself a favor and get it done.

were you in for the 6 month check? did they drive it to duplicate the issue you explained? how long did it take to check, did you have to leave it overnight?

Techs these days are relying on computers too much. How in the world would you plug a computer to a truck to check transmission fluid level.
I´m glad you got it corrected without much trouble. How many miles were on your truck before getting it checked?

I am picking up my DCLBOR4X4 in the morning!
I had them check the transmission level on it and was blown away at what they found!

    e-mail conversation.
me; How was the trans fluid level?

dealer; I guess it was ok. It didn't blow up or fall apart when they went to gas r up. Pre delivery inspection received an A. ;)

me; Did they physically check it? Most have come in a quart or so low causing transmission issues, Learning erratic shifting patterns. People are finding this out at 5 or 10 k service and having to reset computer after filling, so it will learn to shift correct. Some have even been given longer warranties because of the wear on the trans. due to driving it with low fluid.
I really don't want to go through that.

dealer; You were absolutely right. My service manager checked it himself. The transmission fluid was low. So instead of us filling it back up, we emptied it and did a full transmission service on it. We are going to start checking all the tacomas that come in because of this.

    me; Wow! Well OK then.

He then called me and told me that he hated to admit it but when the service manager checked it on Saturday he saw it was low so they drained it and it was only 1/4 filled!!! WTH!
He then told me they have already had to buy back a Tacoma due to Transmission issues and they are checking all of them on the lot right now, and will be checking all of them for now on.
Thanks to this forum I should not be dealing with this problem now! Happy Camper!

I am shocked that Toyota has not solved this issue yet! Anyway GET IT CHECKED GUYS!!!!!

Was this a salesman email? It kinda smells like one. I mean the opening comment is a bit spooky. 'Pre delivery inspection received an A.' since the trans check is not part of the pre delivery inspection.

If it is a salesman, suggest speaking directly to the service department on all this.

If they just 'drained' the trans, they didn't get the converter, hence the 'low' collection in the drain container.

Doesn't really matter since the fluid is new. Unless they just dumped in the total spec amount and it's now overfilled.

Hopefully they actually do know (and perform) the proper service procedure for checking the fluid.

Do bear in mind that total system capacity is around 11 qts and if you just drain the pan only about 3+ will drain out. I don't believe there is a way to drain the full capacity out. That may account for his math coming up with the tranny only being 1/4 full.

Only filled 1/4 full? They do a short drive out of the factory and the truck is driven a few different times at the ports loading and unload and again on and off the carriers. Sure hope it wasn't a dealer trade :annoyed: I wouldn't be concerned it it was a half a quart low or something and the truck only had about 3-4 miles on the odometer

I have dealt with the GM only, not a salesman. I ordered the truck so shouldn't have but a couple miles. I I insisted on them checking it out before I go up there, along with turning off the seatbelt chime. I'm not sure whether it was a little low or really only 1/4 filled, just glad it was checked and full now. I also told him that I wanted a copy of the worked preformed, he said no problem.

Do you need to know, or care?
Kudos to you OP for realizing the issue and having it checked out before delivery. Mine went in twice since delivery, but seems to be worked out now and good to know that info here has led to others having it checked before taking it off the lot and then trying to deal with it after the fact. In the end quarter and half shy of full on mine, made a huge difference in the way it acts.

Cowboy seems to be a top notch dealer.

Looks like the Toyota assembly plants can't figure out how to check the level either. I've yet to see a single thread here that explains the process for a 2016.

Perhaps a simple dipstick would alleviate this disaster.
