I put 500 down to order a 2016 dcld trd off road with tech package with jbl, tow and pred tubes about 3 weeks ago. I did not receive any order info except a receipt. Is that normal. I have read on here somewhere that they were getting status updates emailed to them and such. How should i expect this process to go?

That depends on how good of a dealer/saleman you have. A good salesman will keep you updated every day or at least every two days, whether they have info or not. Did they place an ¨order¨, or are they trying to find one to have transferred? If you actually got them to ¨order¨, then you should have gotten a temporary VIN(at least others here have had it this way). As long as you have a receipt showing your 500 down, I would give them a call and see what is going on, if they can´t tell you, then you may need to get your money back and find another dealer that will take better care of you.

Picking mine up today (8 week total wait). I put down $500 and got a receipt like you. Never got a temp VIN, but after about 3 weeks got a real VIN. They traded out a build with another dealer, so my estimated build date got moved up by a couple weeks. They would never really give me updates on an ECD when I would check in.

The entire process was like pulling teeth. Actually found it easier to get updates from members of this forum that offered to track the progress by VIN. Thank you TW!

They need to send you the specification sheet, which will show the model, all the options, MSRP with options, and the temp VIN. This is a standard form they print out with "Toyota" in red lettering at the top along with the dealer name. It will not have your name on it.

They also need to send you the Purchase Contract, which will have the same temp VIN listed, but will have your info and negotiated price written down. The Purchase Contract needs to have the deposit noted, so they don't "forget" it.

Make sure you're talking to the general sales manager or Internet sales manager. The rest won't have access to your info.

Also, don't expect regular updates. They've already got the sale. They don't care about your new Tacoma nearly as much as you do now.

I went through a similar process. I put down $500 and the dealer sent me the spec sheet with the vin after Toyota accepted the order. They were able to give me an estimated build date which is next week on 4/13. Not sure what the delivery process will be though. I know that there are people on other threads saying that they can track the status of your truck through the process of being built and through the transit process.

Toyota doesn't take orders. Toyota Dealers can pull from vehicles already allocated to be built and delivered to them or they can dealer trade similarly with another dealer who has one coming in. If they know they have the vehicle that closely matches what you want incoming or on planned allocation (color/trim package) they can add or delete factory installed accessories like Bed Extender, Mud Guards, Exhaust Tip, etc. But dealers cannot change the black 4x2 access cab SR5 to a 4x4 DCSB TRD OR. If they have the White TRD OR DCSB being built on allocation, they can "reserve" it for you and edit the accessories added at factory.

Pester your salesperson once a week (Thursday) every week until they get off their cellphone and contact Toyota and get the weekly report. If they truly sent in an order for you to Toyota expect up to 3 weeks to get an acceptance of the order. Another couple of weeks to get a build date and Temporary Vin and another 3 weeks for the build to be made and get a final Vin and another couple of weeks for the truck to get out of port and then shipped to your dealer. If the Dealer spends 2 weeks fiddly farting around trying to trade truck allocations with other dealers it just makes it that much longer to get your order in the pipeline. Especially if your ordering a rainbow colored unicorn. Ordering a common color, 2wd, 4 door short bed that are already in the pipeline being built you shouldn't have too much trouble getting it.

For me the dealer had a long bed 4x4 in their allocation. They requested for the changes to be made to the truck to match my specs desired. Toyota accepted the order change and I was provided a temporary vin and a build date. I don't see why this process should differ dealer to dealer as long as the dealer rep know what they are doing.

This is what I got in email. Dealer was so sure he could sell it, he did not take a deposit. I had worked with him before.

For me it was not a matter of whether they could sell the truck after I either bought or backed out but it was to keep the dealer from selling it before I could come and pick it up.
