Hey everyone it's my first post here, and I'm thinking about pulling the plug on a 2016 Trd sport 4x4. Trying to decide between auto and manual trans, and from what I understand the manual is geared lower than the auto. The largest tire size I would be putting is probably a 33x12.5. From what I understand with the manual I would be getting better mpg that with the auto since it would extend 6th gear correct?? I know many other factors apply, but in essence It would make more of a drastic change in the auto than with the manual correct. Anyone have 33's that can chime in? Thanks!

with 33's kiss mpg out-the-door. now to the question auto or manual, here in SoCal, traffic is insane, without auto I would have been on the news for latest road-rage incident. However auto has the low tranny fluid problem and is a bit overzealous on shifting(hunts a bit). Yes people I'm playing it down a bit. The manual transmission much more fun.

Maybe it's good you got an auto if a manual stresses you that much o_O

Don't overthink it. Buy the transmission you want to drive.

So many people that drive autos say its because they hate driving stick in traffic but if you learn to drive like the big rigs do and only move forward when you have a car length or 2 instead of creaping every inch like you do in an auto its really not bad at all. I soley drive a stick and will until my knee gives out or until they stop selling them.

You can't compare the gearing from a manual and an auto directly. On the surface the manual looks like it's geared much lower, but the torque converter in an auto multiples the gear ratio by 1.4 - 1.8. I'm not sure the exact torque multiplier of the torque converter that Toyota uses in the Tacoma but I'm betting they set it up so the gearing is the same between the auto and the manual.

Agreed. I drive stick (have for the last several years) and I also live in Los Angeles. I've never once regretted having a stick shift. They are way more fun to drive, and if you know how to drive it right when in traffic, it isn't that bad.

I also like it because it keeps me more focused on the road, and it's an added theft-deterrent ;)

    Get the manual!
You'll enjoy the fact that ur not driving like a zombie.

And with all the issues popping up with the autos, you may be more frustrated then sitting in traffic. I commute around DC and for all the harassment my buddies gave me I still would get the manual.

If a guy ever hassled me about driving a manual I'd revoke his man card right there on the spot.

I live in Socal and have a manual. Never get frustrated in traffic, I don't know. This is my first manual transmission vehicle and I already find myself shifting without thinking.

On my highway commute to work, i get roughly 20-21 mpg. You probably won't save gas over an auto because once you find out what 3k+ rpm's feels like (and the fact that you have the ability to shift there and not lower), you'll probably find yourself playing around a lot more.

Thier argument for not having manual any longer was 1. Traffic is too bad 2. I have kids now so need a family car.
I bought the truck w/ manual as a family car knowing I'd deal w/ the same traffic. They are just being pansies. (didn't call 'em girls cause there are plenty of ladies here w/ manuals)

Manual is the way to go for drivability and performance with larger tires. Do you want to drive your truck, or do you want your truck to drive you?

So here is the point of view that I'm taking. I know it's a truck and mpg is never gonna be great. I would definitely prefer a manual, but mpg is playing a factor in the way that I'm coming from a duramax averaging about 12.5 mixed. With about a 15 average freeway. So the only way it seems worth it to me is if I can get about a 17 mpg average mix on the Tacoma

I'm pretty sure the newer Tacomas average about that (17) or even higher, you'll definitely be getting better mileage than you did in your duramax anyway.

I like manuals too because I can better control my MPG by making sure I keep my RPM's where I want them; I don't have to worry about the truck's computer making that decision for me

With 33's its not guaranteed, I'd consider sticking to a max of 32x10.5 (265/75R16, 265/70R17) and nothing too aggressive or heavy if you want decent fuel economy.

Just installed basically 33's (285/70/17) and I've averaged 14mpg for the last two tanks. Granted I haven't even passed 1k miles yet, I live in an incredibly congested area and drive in traffic every single day. I've tried to see what my mpg would be say driving up the thruway at like 70mph and I'm pretty sure I'll be lucky to top 16. Mine is a manual fyi.

Oh and I have Duratracs on which are LT class D tires/10 ply. They are heavier than others but I absolutely love these things and they're my third set.

I average mixed 15mpg and 20 to 21 on the highway. Stock 16' AC Sport 6 spd. All city right now I'm sitting at 14.8mpg over 150 miles. It is what it is. Sure I miss the 30+ I was getting out of my 15 corolla but it feels like a lot more than my 12' FJ getting 12 mpg.

Driving stick definitely makes you pay more attention, if there were no automatics there would be way less stupid accidents and much better drivers.

Love that pic, i want it on a tshirt lol
