04 Dual Cab V6/auto with 232k. Having some shifting issues. I took it to A+Transmission, they pulled the pan and it looked fine per the Tech. They are telling me that the problem is electronic in nature. My bud says I should take it to the dealer and have the tranny Re-Mapped. Anyone ever re-mapped their tranny?

mis shifts? you'll need to describe the issue in more detail. could just be a clogged shift solenoid. when was the last time you changed the fluid?

I have no clue what that means. Well, outside of driver error with a manual transmission.

    Can you be more specific?

@gearcruncher is our resident trans guru, but I think even he will need something more descriptive to have good input.

The fluid has never been changed and that was exactly what I was going to do so I took it to A+. He test drove it and hooked it up for diagnostics and said my issue was electronic in nature. My symptoms are sporadic gaps or lurchs when shifting. I first noticed it at around 45/50mph when having to let off the gas when someone would pull in front of me and then once I applied the throttle it will "lurch" and hit kinda hard once it shifts. I'm babying it right now and trying to stay off the freeways until I get this figured out.

    Thanks Bill !!!

I have to agree with Bill . If the problem is electronic in nature , your tech has to be more specific .
With this said , your transmission is computer controlled and needs to be connected to the scanner for proper diagnostics . If your tech already did this and didn't let you know what the problem was , call him back and ask what code came up .
You got any lights popping up on the dash ?
Here is some info , but you really need the codes the tech saw on the scanner

yeah first thing's first. change the fluid and the tranny filter. you may want to concider buying 2 filter kits and swapping to the second after a hundred miles.

mainly because when you change the fluid, you're only changing half since the torque converter and the rest of the tranny carry more than half of the oil. change what you can, run it for a bit to mix it up, and change it again to get it a slight bit cleaner.

Is nice to see that when you take it to a professional, theyre method of diagnosis is to remove the pan and look for something that is or not OK.

Its a Tacoma, not a Supra, youre not going to be re-mapping the TCM. Either way, thats not going to fix mis-shifting.

Thanks everyone for all the advice. This is the very first real issue of concern I have had with my truck since I bought it seven years ago. Gotta love it...

Have you checked your "kick down" cable adjustment? It's easy to do and if it's way off it may be causing some of your issues.

I beleive the OP,s truck uses an electronic transmission ,,,,,no kickdown on this critter and uses a throttle position sensor to show engine load .
He needs to call the tech that scanned the truck and get the codes or scan it himself

I've been nursing this thing along for over a month now by staying out of overdrive as much as possible. I took it to a shop and let them road test it. it's like I thought, it's the torque converter. Soooo what all am I gonna need to do to to get the tranny and converter out?

You have a lot of mileage on the truck . You have 2 options
Go to the trans shop and have the transmission rebuilt
Go to the trans shop with a used transmission and have it installed .
Either way , you are spending $1000 bucks plus to have the problem fixed .
There are a lot of good deals on Tacoma World .
Post up that your looking for a transmission .

Well Hell. I'd been wanting another truck for a while to pull my two bike trailer anyway so I signed on the dotted line. Thanks for all the advice but it's in the for sale section now.
