Just picked up an SR 4x4, 4 Cylinder, AC, Manual and am having a bit of Monday morning buyer's remorse with not going with the V6 version. I don't plan on doing much 4x4ing, but would like to hear if others have tried and how the 4L version handles the terrain. Also, how are other 4 Cylinder owners liking the truck so far and have they found it to be under powered? I've only got a dozen miles on the truck so far, just want to get an honest opinion from other 3rd gen owners out there on any short comings of the 4 Cylinder model.

Good to hear jwctaco, I'm upgrading from an 89' Ranger and this is the first vehicle I have ever owned with a functioning A/C, so I'm still kind of in shock.

I wouldn't sweat it, unless you want to go fast...that's something the 2.7L won't ever do unless you spend a lot of money on it.

But the 2.7l is arguably Toyota's best gas motor, its been around forever and is absolutely bullet proof. That alone is worth a lot IMO.

Do I get anywhere fast? No.

Do I get there just the same? Yes.

Four low pulls me up the boat ramp with a 16.5' fiberglass (much heavier than aluminum) bass boat with little to no gas pedal application.

Four high I can scoot around the farm doing just about anything I need to do. I haul hay, tools and whatever else with perfect ease.

I do handy man work occasionally and load my truck up with sheet rock, wood and even a load of gravel from time to time. I get going with MY day a lot faster it seems than the "big rig" truck owners.

Could a V6 do it easier? Yeah.

Do I wonder if I should have got a V6?Yeah

At the end of the day, do it get what I need to get done just the same? Yeah.

Over all, if the truck just can't fit your lifestyle, trade it, sell it or set it on fire.

I believe here in America we think "the big the the better." I've come to believe the more efficient per my lifestyle the better. And my little 2.7l has surprised me tenfold. Way more than any V6 or V8 has ever done. And truly I feel like the little bugger is bullet proof. ;)

Right on Hondah, that is the kind of honest feedback I came here to find and I am pretty much in your same boat (no pun intended). Speaking of which, how heavy is your boat/trailer and what modifications (other than the hitch) did you add in regards to towing? Ideally I would like to get a little pop-up tent trailer some day but wasn't sure if the stock 4-cylinder taco could handle that.

The 89 ranger had more power than the 16 taco? Have you tried keeping the revs higher?

I love my 2.7. As long as I could burn rubber on u turns, I'm happy.

My 5 speed 4 cylinder hauls a good 1200-1300lbs of firewood great!

Mine's a 2nd gen, same motor though, and I love it! I do occasionally wonder if I should have gotten a v6 as it would handle extra weight better but I don't regret my choice. The 2tr has a great reputation for being very reliable and long lived that's why I choose it. I also find it a little easier to work under the hood since to motor is a good bit smaller.

4lo will make a world of difference. It's more than twice as low! A few times wheeling I was in 4hi and creeping up a hill and lost my momentum. I switched into 4lo and easily started out on the hill (I've got a 5 speed too) and used very little gas pedal to continue. It's a slow ride in lo but the torque is phenomenal!

No regrets and almost 7k miles. Sure I may trade up to a v6 in a few years but I love getting 26 mpg also.

I find mine thoroughly entertaining. Like driving an MG. gear selection matters, have to think ahead for merges, but she will do 80mph up and down hills with 1000lbs in the bed no problem. And I am pretty sure she will run indefinitely.

I have zero desire for the 3.5 V6. If I want to drive fast, I am not driving a Tacoma.

BUCKLE UP! It makes it harder for Aliens to pull you out of your Truck.
Well, you bought the slowest 0-60 mph vehicle on the planet but you knew that, right? Other than that when everybody is cruising on the highway you'll be all over them if you wish. I can take on the big boys.... all day, every day and highway fuel economy is just stellar. There's just something about 60 mph, 4:11 gears and a little bit of torque that make me smile. Now, long steep uphill grades need planning but in the end it's all good. Enjoy your new truck. Keep an eye on your wallet it can get out of hand quickly if you let it. I let it.
