Got a text from a breeder this morning...

Jericho here, suffered an eye injury when really young, and according to the breeder, he's otherwise healthy and the eye is infection free. He will not have sight from one of his eyes, and the breeder says that currently that eye lid does not typically open (they suggested sewing that eye shut - I need to find out of that might help prevent future infections/complications, or if it would be cosmetic).

I'm awaiting a phone call from my vet to see what his thoughts are on possible complications pertaining to the eye (I'm well aware of other possible health issues), but wondering what everyone here thinks about adopting a pet with a known and permanent injury.

The breeder is asking for $300 for him (current cost of vet bills at this point). Their normal asking price is $1,850. I've been to the breeders home before, and aside from being on a farm out in Timbuktu Oregon, I'm fairly happy with the way they care for their dogs.

Day to day care of the dog (food, toys, etc... even the occasional vet visit) isn't a concern... To some extent, an unexpected vet bill that's gonna run a few to several hundred dollars I can deal with... But knowing that I'm getting a dog that HAS to have some expensive surgery... well that I'm not sure about. I know I just need to wait for my vet to call back.

I would also consider talking with someone at the Hannah Society... my ex adopted a French bulldog from a breeder and took her to Hannah and signed up for their monthly service. From what I remember, their monthly cost covered food and all vet costs & prescriptions... maybe I should call her and see how that's been for her over the past few years.

I don't care about papers, nor do I care if I get the dog from a breeder. I couldn't pay the $1,850 for a puppy, and have been looking at a semi-local bulldog rescue organization for adoption to get a bulldog... Do I want an English Bulldog, yes... blame the desire on one of my childhood heroes "The Brittish Bulldog" Davey Boy Smith.

Two tone bullies some times even go for 25 at least when I was looking. I say go for it I mean you're buying a dog As companion not a comp dog or show dog. Even if his eye is a little tweaked as long as it has no way to affect his health later then go for it I mean bullies are notorious for health issues though.

I don't get why people continue to breed dogs and cats, and why people insist on buying them, when there are so many already sitting in a cage at the pound. If you back out of this deal that's where Jericho is likely headed...or worse. Perfect or not, he'll love you the same.

My only concern about him, and this is a phone call I'm waiting for from my vet, is possible vet/financial costs that would result from the injury. I'm realistic enough to know that if there is going to be expenses beyond my means, I need to pass on him (and hope that wherever he ends up IS capable of supporting future vet costs).

FWIW, I'm half deaf... I would hate to start dating someone only to have her leave me because of that.

And yes, I am totally considering a windshield sticker that says "The deaf leading the blind" (yes, I also know that's backwards of what the idiom is)

Because some people think the breeders are the best route to get dogs, and papers mean everything to some people. I have always had mutts, and they have always made the best dogs. But to each their own I guess, and could never imagine spending that kind of money on an animal cute or not. I'm referring to the 1850.00 that is just to me a waste of money.

Agreed but who knows what kind of financial commitment it could turn into. But hey OP if you are in it for the long haul go for it

i adopted a blind daschund from a breeder that was going to put her to sleep, because he could't sell her. She is a great dog and has no idea she is blind cause she has never seen,so to her everything is normal.

Give that fat little guy a home!! He's awesome, and totally unique. You also clearly already care about him.

The only thing that would worry me is that he can't see who "attackers/intruders" are. So he might snap at you if you startle him.

Edit: if it's only one eye, I wouldn't worry about it and 10/10 would adopt.

    I'll second that adoption offer.

Is it just 1 eye or both?

My thoughts exactly...except I already have two rescued pups. You will love him and he will love you, so who cares. If money is the issue, don't get a dog. All pets cost money. Vet bills will pale in comparison to money spent on food, toys, beds, etc.

First dibs... but if the vet advises otherwise... I'll trade the dog for some sliders :D lol

    KIDDING!!!

He's an English Bulldog, not a German Shepard... the best he could do is snore an intruder into submission!! LOL

if you feel the connection with the pup then its meant to be, people adopt dogs with three legs a lot so this is no difference. I think this pup is adorable and needs a owner who will love it. I say go for it man
