If it's the same NC 105 that goes through the gorge and hits Wiseman's view, I drive it last summer. Wasn't bad at all. Rutted up and wash boarded from people that don't know how to drive up hills with gravel. But other than that I don't see needing 4x. Could be wrong

Just verified it's the same. Don't know what's changed. It's a good drive, I just don't understand why they are saying that.

A fun ride in the middle of the winter but take friends and a winch if you go that time of year since the road is snow and ice covered.

Yep that is it. Not wanting to go alone if snow and ice covered still. Otherwise some good stops along the way to nice Gorge and Table rock views

Also a good road to run your truck in 4 x 4 if you are like me and don't get enough 4 x 4 time on the truck.

The road is just gravel, I could take my jetta if i wanted, also no snow or ice at this time...
Its minutes from my house, fun little road for letting the suspension absorb some little washboards

Low and slow.. chopped up on 35s
I ran it from one end to the other 2 weeks ago.. Average speed was about 35-40.. In daylight, slightly wet condition.. No 4wd needed.. Camped just just past wisemans and had 60 mph wind gusts that night.. Woke up to a few trees across the road..
The weather changes up there fast, dense fog rolls in out of nowhere, It went from 55 and clear to THICK fog and about 35 and then clear and 60 mph wind gusts and 28 degrees over the span of about 7 hrs

Go there about every year. Went there this past Feb. It's not bad at all. I used to do it with my prerunner. Hell I've even seen Honda's and a Fiat go up there. Some spots are worse than others for sure, but common sense goes a long ways.

Yea I've seen that road washed out and sketchy and I've seen it in near perfect shape. All depends on how much money they have to regrade it.

Thanks all. Have to ride it every few years. Seen many cars over the years on the road. Our first run was with our 4Wheeler club back in 79' when it was snow and ice covered. That was a trip, recorded 60 miles on the odometer on that 18 mile road. I'll post pics from our trip tomorrow, plan on hiking a few shorts hikes tomorrow.

Old 105 was about the same other than the washboard curves were a little worse. Loved the ability to quickly shift into 1st for those curves. Several cars were on the road but more trucks and jeeps at the camp sites. One had a cool tent on the top of his vehicle. Started on the Lake James State part end and ended up at Linville Falls which we had planned. Hiked the Plunge Basin trail down the bottom of the falls. Fun trip and a great hike at the end.

Tons of campsites along that road. There are some brutal hikes in that area too if you're looking for a challenge.

    New headlights yesterday!
