I have a 4x4 V6 TRD OR and I can't wait to get rid of the stock tires. My truck is not lifted and I do not want to worry about rubbing so I have decided on 265/75R16. The BFG K02s look very capable and are popular here but I do not want to deal with the MPG/power hit from heavy tires all the time. So, that gets me to the question: What would you get if you had two sets of wheels to put tires on?

Set 1 will be used 95% on road driving with 5% light off road. Should maintain high mileage (light), be quiet, have good road manners, and acceptable winter performance.

Set 2 will be used almost exclusively off road. The only on road driving will be to/from the wheeling/camping location.

I like the Hankook Dynapro AT-Ms for set 1 because they seem like a good compromise and are only 39 lbs in 265/75R16 standard load. For set 2 I originally considered the BFG KO2s, but since these are off road only I do not need to settle for an A/T tire.

I have 265 70 17's in c load as my dd and only saw a 1/2 mpg difference from the stock 265 65 17's. They are fine for the highway with little noise. If the 16" is offered in c load I wouldn't hesitate. Got rid of my stock tires on craigslist after 8k miles no problem.

I did not sell my stock tires (yet). I would love to, but I know I should use them up on the road instead of wasting them. My thinking is that if I had a second set of off road tires I could overcome the desire to sell my stock tires immediately and replace them with a better A/T tire once they are worn out. So for set 1 I am currently thinking stock -> 265/75R16 Hankook Dynapro ATM when they wear out. I am interested in this tire because it keeps the weight down and seems to get generally positive reviews.

For set 2 I picked up a set of TRD OR wheels from a local TW'er and plan on getting cloned TPMS units, if possible. If I am unable to make the TPMS work then fine, these are fun only wheels/tires and I can handle the TPMS light on wheeling trips. While I am figuring that out I have also been looking at tires. I originally considered KO2s or Duratracs but since this is my 2nd set I figured I should go all out with a mud tire instead of A/Ts. I am currently looking at BFG KM2s and Goodyear MT/Rs in 265/75R16 or 235/85R16. Any comments on these tires or sizes for off road use?

I appreciate the swamper recommendation but are they really 50% better? Also, they do not seem as available as the above options.

Just the essentials and no extra fluff.
KM2 or STT Pro for a dedicated off road tire.

I have the 265/75-16 KO2 tires. The power loss isn't very noticeable.Fuel mileage is a about 1-1.5 MPG less. The steering is little heavier ,but the ride is smooth.

    Update:

I saw lots of great reviews for both the BFG KM2s and GY MT/Rs. I am going with the MT/Rs because I want to try skinny 32s and the KM2s are not available in 235/85R16. Shopping around now for 4 of these to put on my off-road/spare set of wheels. I will update with pics and impressions when I get them.

My rugged trails still have a lot of tread so the decision for my on road or A/T set will be differed for a while. I am still leaning toward 265/75R16 Dynapro AT-Ms for their light weight.
