That is not a safe recovery point. That is a tie down point shipping only. Rampage sells a set of 5/8 shackle mounts for a CJ/YJ/TJ that have the same bolt spacing as the factory tie down and tow hook mount. Just have to get metric bolts to go with it.

I hear ya, but it will be there when you need it. The price of safety and peace of mind.

On tacomas there is a factory recovery point on the passenger side, and on the drivers side is a tiedown, not meant for recovery (maybe I misunderstood your post?)

Yes. I would add to your post - light recovery. I wouldn't trust that factory recovery hook for anything requiring deep recovery.
Pulling trees off a trail, stuck in snow - yes. Deep mud/sand, multiple snatch pulls - no.

What I quoted was the tie down point, the recovery point would be the tow hook.

The factory recovery point has to be rated per government standards to recover the vehicle.

This is on first gen but you should get the idea. Looks like you will not have to trim from the pics in this thread.

Hahaha. NO and I don't intend on ever being around to watching that happen. I have heard enough horror stories about them snapping.

When we are talking putting people's lives at risk here, I'd prefer not to be investigated and charged for indirect negligence or manslaughter due to a flying piece of metal.

    This. This so much.

Just the essentials and no extra fluff.
I have the TRD Off Road. It comes with the passenger side recovery hook. It's a nice horizontal hook with the little nubs to keep a strap from slipping off. My issue is a lack of options for the driver side. There is an existing loop welded to the top of the same piece of steel the hook is bolted to, but my understanding is that it's purely a shipping tie down and not intended for recovery. There are no bolt holes on that side. I want to have a bridle connecting the two recovery points and sharing the load, but I'm not too confident in connecting a shackle to that point. I wish somebody would engineer a shackle mount for the driver side.
