Anyone actually had a slashed tonneau?

Every time I see a thread about tonneau covers, I see multiple people whining about how insecure the soft ones are. I've had soft top wranglers and tonneuas on pickups for 15 years and have never had one slashed. I'm curious how many people have actually had one slashed by a thief.

I think the only incident that I've ever had was a case of beer taken out of the back seat of my old Wrangler in college, and they unzipped the window to get it. Just saying.

Where do you live? How do you store your vehicle and how many burglaries, robberies and thefts are in your area?

Live in an apartment complex with nightly cop visits? Have to park your truck at work in a seedy area? Then yea, chances that will go up.

    Prolly have your answer there.

I had a tree branch fall down and tear through my old trucks soft tonneau. Gorrila tape "fixed" it for the next year till I traded it in.

I don't have one yet, but will at some point. This is my answer to you:

I live outside of Concord, NH in a REALLY small town. I hardly ever head south into Manchester or MA. I frequently head north to the White Mountains. Last summer we had a major crime wave hit my small town. It was terrible. The neighborhood kids broke into 10-15 cars on my street and stole pocket change to try to buy beer. All the cars that were hit were left unlocked and nothing else was taken. Just the change. No pocketbooks, cell phones, iPads, nothing. Just change. Oh the horror. I'm not too worried about where I live or when I head north. If I were to head south, I'd roll it up to show there is nothing in there and remove temptation. I don't know of too many soft top Jeeps that have been hit. Or convertibles. That said, I wouldn't store anything in there that I wasn't prepared to loose.

Of course they are insecure. What matters is if you have something you carry that needs to be secure.

And you have to have a locking tailgate to complete the security.

Now consider even those locks (tonneau/tailgate) aren't hard to defeat if one has enough motive, time and a couple of tools.

I have a soft cover. No locking tailgate, so no one would have reason to slash other than stupidity or vandalism. But I don't leave anything of value in it in places at risk (motels overnight, etc.)

Back when I owned my Jeep, I parked it outside of my friends apartment while we went to a part. It seemed like a nice part of town, but unfortunately, some thugs slashed the windows and took my cd player face plate (not the whole unit, just the face plate). The worst part about the whole incident is that all of my doors were unlocked so there was no need to even slash the windows... All that is to say, it doesn't matter where you are, there is always a chance of having the cover slashed.

Never had one slashed, but some asshat threw a half smoked cigarette on my old soft tonneau. Burned a hole through it.

No, but related...decades ago I had a Fiat 124 Spider and had parked it with the top down, when I returned, I found a half-eaten taco in the seat. I know, Taco, how ironic.
