I am also very lucky. I bought my Tacoma from a dealership quite far from where I live. I took it to a large dealer (Montgomrey, AL) near where I live to check out the badly fitting rear door window seal. Lady service writer gave me the typical Toyota B/S "that's normal!" Just on a whim I stopped by another dealer (who is actually a little closer) in Enterprise, AL. A young man name John (certified tech who has won awards with Toyota) looked at the door seal and said "that's not right." They took pictures of the seal promptly ordered me a new one. I mentioned the transmission discussions on TW to the tech and he said he was well aware of them as he follows the forum. He said "just to be safe, can you leave it overnight with me and I will check your transmission and differential fluid levels and the torque setting on your rear springs as well as changing out the door seal." He feels that if a customer has a compliant or concern it is Toyota's obligation to check it out...regardless.

its not like there is guy named Jose opening bottles to fill transmissions. its done by machine, in this case poorly setup machine. So if more than one vehicle has a problem, you can bet every vehicle that went through that line is under filled .

I've known citizens who have had rear disk swaps on their Tacomas and recorded worse brake performance than when the truck was equipped with drums. The drum brake is not a failed design, it works well in fact, it's just old.

And no, Toyota Corporate doesn't need you.

There are a lot of factors that can cause an engine to go into Limp Mode. I don't recall the OP specifying which gear he was in when the fault occurred, however the fact remains that this is V6. Take the weight of the trailer, and likely circumstance that this was an onramp with an incline, being pulled by an "economy truck" (face it, the Tacoma isn't meant for towing) with a high-gear transmission and small displacement engine, and you are all surprised that the engine went into Limp Mode? If you are trying to pull a 5000Lb Trailer on an incline (keep in mind that towing specs are based on level ground) and trying to accelerate on valve-cycle-timing advancement, small displacement V6, you are going to create a fault.

I'm willing to bet that the code was thrown by either the cam position sensor or the crankshaft position sensor; caused by the extreme engine load putting enough resistance on the drive train while the engine was trying advance cycle and timing and thus the DTC was thrown to prevent valve damage (contact with a piston).

While I agree with a lot of things said this is false. There are a LOT that goes into a tow rating and it's not just based on level ground. You should look into it more. It's actually pretty impressive what all has to be passed at a weight to get to that rating

 

I did look thru all other topics for few hrs on what blue t saying and others. I had to weed out the trollers. True the 3rd gen product is not good as 2nd gen. Still going to have its own quirks which can be fix but still going to have some major issues which can be an ass drag.
I can see the quality is getting bad on toytoa side and treatment of loyal customers is in the shits.
From what i hearing about the 16 taco. I will not buy one until late 2018 if the company ever get right from many wrongs. My 14 taco is going to be the last one.

 

OP sorry that happened. The pic of the tow driver is priceless.
I hope your truck gets figured out & the situation all works out for the best.

I didn't own a 2nd gen Tacoma so I can't confirm your statement about the 2nd being better than the 3rd gen. So far I have had very few issues with my '16 SR5. The only problem (and it is really not one) is one rear door window seal does not fit properly and that will be corrected shortly. As I stated in my previous post, the tech offered to check the transmission, differential, and springs when he replaces the seal (only as a precaution not because of issues). Only inconvenience is having to leave it overnight until the transmission fluid reaches a certain temp. He said that Toyota has a tool that will measure transmission fluid at any temperature but he doesn't like its reliability. I have had 3 Tundras ('01, '05, '12) and never had to have a dealer do a thing to any of them. They were still "tight" up until the day I sold them. I would have kept the '12 Tundra a little longer as it only had 45K on the "clock" but I hit a mail box and badly scratched the side and that was it for that truck! Plus, the '12 was just too f****** big for me. All I can say is get in a Chevy or Ford truck with 50K+ miles and see if it is still tight....

I am only going to be in town for work for a week, going to have to find a way to squeeze in a visit. My dealer here said they checked all that too, but it didn't take them as long as others have said it should to do all that. Call me paranoid if you want, but better safe than sorry.
