I work at a pest control company trapping wildlife. Do NOT put a chimney cap on until they're gone. Think about how much a mouse smells when it dies, multiply that to the size of a coon. This time of year raccoon eviction fluid will normally get them out. A cage trap with either wet cat food or marshmallows/ jelly will also do the trick.

Are the coons in the chimney flue or the cavity between the bricks and flue? If they're in the cavity, a chimney cap will be a waste of effort in that case.

You'll have to re-point and rework the cement chimney cap around the exposed flue.

I think they have moved out. I haven't heard anything in there since I put clumps of cat pee down there. But, when I looked in there 2 days ago I couldn't see them. Which makes me think they were hiding somewhere in there I couldn't see. I have insulation stuffed in the fireplace in my house with a metal cover over it. I do have to put all the bricks back up at the top of my chimney. They knocked about 8 bricks loose total. I'm going to fix it when the weather drys out a bit. It's been raining and snowing a lot lately.

Hope they're gone. If you have to trap and relocate take them at least twenty mi. away.
Trapped a coon at the family farm, relocated 5 mi. couple days later had another. Trapped him and spray painted a big red dot on him, relocated. Sure enough days later the red dot b******d is back. Had to relocate him to the deep hole in the creek, never came back.
Ohio also does not allow nuisance animals to be released but when there are kids involved you make allowances.
